Third: National expression in art is to be sought not in detail nor in composition, but in a more subtle quality of ensemble, just as in expression by speech, the modern lan guages are essentially differentiated, though derived from the same anterior source, and almost identical in alphabet and structure. Fourth: One finds in the solution of certain well defined problems, such as the high office building and narrow city lot (eloquent of democratic, individual liberty), points in the progress of an evolution, though they do not yet indicate even remotely the character of our future American architect ure as a distinctive style. Fifth: By an honest, rational effort toward thorough edu cation in the underlying principles of design, and by their proper use in application to modern problems, we can most surely conduce toward modern American architecture, with out anxiety as to the future.
