Methods are given for nondestructively inspecting rocket motor cases, nozzles, and motor-case insulation. The motor cases may be fabricated from steel, titanium, or glass-reinforced plastics and made by welding or wrapping processes. In some designs, the nozzle consists of tungsten inserts fitted in graphite heat-sink backup rings with a molybdenum sleeve shrunk over the graphite ring. The inside insulation is generally a rubber-base substance adhered to the motor case. (Author).

The possibility of inducing combustion instability in the Apache and Cajun solid propellant rocket motors was investigated by introducing an acoustic disturbance: pulse tubes loaded with black powder were fired. One Apache and one Cajun rocket motor were tested. The reduced data show that the acoustic disturbances introduced into the motors by the firing of the pulse tubes rapidly dampened out. Since the scope of the testing was limited, it is not possible to conclude absolutely that the Apache or Cajun will never resonate; however, the probability of resonance is very slight. (Author).
