Excerpt from British Mountaineering The author desires to express his warmest thanks to the many fellow-climbers who have assisted him in his work with advice, criticism, and with illustrations. Indeed the kindness he has experienced - sometimes from mountaineers he has never even seen - has been remarkable, and he wishes to record here his most cordial appreciation of it. He would only add that where he has repeated himself, as in the case of Mr. C. E. Matthews' noteworthy words (chapters I and IX), and elsewhere, he has done so advisedly. Excerpt from British Mountain Climbs It has often been stated that a conveniently small and concise guide to the British rock-climbs is badly needed. The writer trusts that the present work, the result for the most part of personal experience and exploration, will meet this want. In the descriptions, the terms "right or left" have been used as applying to the ascent of a climb, except in the rare instances when a descent is mentioned. An attempt has been made to group the climbs around the most convenient centres, and the best maps for these are mentioned at the beginning of the leading chapters. Graduated lists of courses for each district have, with some diffidence, been included. Doubtless no two climbers would agree as to the classification of the British courses, but the writer is convinced of the general utility of these lists to all right-minded sportsmen, and he craves some indulgence from those who would alter the order of classification. The fine points of the comparative difficulty and danger of any given climbs are inseparable from the personal equation. It is scarcely necessary to repeat the warning regarding the exceptionally severe courses; in the volumes dealing with Rock Climbing in the English Lake District, North Wales, and Skye this matter has been carefully considered. Excerpt from Crag and Hound in Lakeland The portions of this book which relate to rock-climbing are primarily addressed to beginners. The number of climbers increases yearly, and it seemed to me that some kind of Child's Guide would be acceptable to fill in the interval between the chapters on elementary British mountaineering by Mr. Pilkington Badminton Library) and Dr. Claude Wilson Mountaineering: All England Series and the works of Haskett Smith and O. G. Jones. Fellside hunting has, so far as I know, only been treated of hitherto in occasional articles. I have endeavoured to have my statements in regard to this branch of sport thoroughly checked by good men who have followed the hounds for years, and I wish to acknowledge my indebted ness to these, and also to those Masters who have been kind enough to furnish me with particulars about their packs. To George Abraham and his brother Ashley, as guides, protectors, and especially as friends, I cannot adequately express my thanks. Excerpt from On Alpine Heights, and British Crags "Whoever looked at them," said an Arab writer in 1686, referring to certain mountains supposed to be identical with Ruwenzori, "became attracted, and stuck to them until he died, and this science is called human magnetism." An allied species of "human magnetism" is noticeable on many mountains at the present time. But this nowadays takes the name of mountaineering, and so fascinating is the sport that few who have once been attracted by it fail to "stick" to the mountains to the end of life. Truly once a climber always a climber - in spirit if not in deed. Previous to the outbreak of the great war mountaineering had been greatly on the increase. This was due in some considerable measure to the winter-sport fashion, and to the exploitation of rock-climbing in Britain. Men of all nationalities visited, and still visit, for instance, the Lake Country crags, and few of the thousands of ordinary tourists, who annually come to the district, fail to hear or see something of its fascinations for the climber. Excerpt from The Complete Mountaineer Bout two years ago the publishers thought it desirable that mountaineering should be brought into line with our other national sports. In other words, they decided to publish a work entitled, The Complete Mountaineer, uniform with their other well-known Complete Series. This accounts for the apparently presumptuous title of this book, and the author craves pardon for what his brother climbers might well describe as an impossible pitch. N 0 one is aware of the difficulty and resultant shortcomings of the undertaking more than the author; but he feels that the outcome of his personal experience, both in technical matters and on the mountains themselves, may prove of service and interest to the largely increasing public who find their greatest pleasure in the high places of the earth. In the technical sections no lengthy attempt has been made to explain or teach details that can only be learnt in actual practice on the mountains, and in charge of more or less experienced friends. When dealing with the various districts, the author has, for the most part, so arranged the information culled from his own actual expeditions, that each chapter may prove useful to those who are making a first visit to the regions dealt with. As far as possible, second-hand opinions, which in mountaineering are notoriously contradictory and conflicting, have been avoided, and the actual personal experiences of a somewhat strenuous climbing career form the bulk of the book. Excerpt from Mountaineering A perusal of the above paragraph might lead an unbiassed critic to conclude that this is not a favourable time for the publication of a book which could, by any possibility, tend to swell the number of Alpine climbers. I trust that I am right in thinking such a critic wrong. Mountaineering is one of the finest and healthiest exercises in the world, and, as such, it must command a continuous supply of recruits the important point is that those who do enter, and will continue to enter, its lists, should understand the principles which alone make it a justifiable recreation. Excerpt from Mountaineering Art Mountaineering is the art of getting up and down mountains. The master of the art is he who can make his ascents in good style, with ease to himself, and with safety to his companions. The whole art of mountaineering is one not easy of acquirement, or to be mastered in one or two seasons. It must always be the outcome of long practical experience, united to natural aptitude. The art cannot be properly acquired from the pages of a book. Precept 1s nothing without practice, the sole superiority, in most cases, of the professional guide is constant practice. The best method for a novice to learn is to watch an adept at work. Nevertheless, a great deal may be learned about equipment and technique from the printed page and the illustration. In this volume an endeavour has been made, to trace and indicate the broad principles of climbing and mountaineering, from bouldering to the conquest of the highest summits of the earth. The book is the outcome of more than twenty years' experience as a climbing leader in many parts of the asio-european continent, and on almost every kind of rock, snow, and ice formation. In preparation for it, almost every published work on climbing and mountaineering, in English, and in the principal continental languages, has been consulted. If the notes and advice contained in my book are found of assistance in the equipment of the ideal mountaineer, the safe one, the author's aim will be fulfilled.
