Two Books in One! A place worth dying in, 1938 New Orleans. The City That Care Forgot, a bubbling gumbo of Jazz, Blues, Booze, Bullets... and murder. The World War left Jack Callahan and Lane Walsh slightly scarred, with their own code about how things should be done. A missing Jazzman, a powerful mafia boss, and a cast of characters as if Charles Dickens set his book in 1930's New Orleans, all add to the recipe of a new noir series from International Best-Selling author Kevin Steverson, and William Alan Webb. Fans of Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe, Dashiel Hammett and The Maltese Falcon, Michael Connelly or Elmore Leonard, may find themselves immersed in the cases of Delta Private Investigations.

As a child, John imagined that when he grew up, he would live in the countryside or some sleepy Ulster country town enjoying a quiet somewhat conservative lifestyle, just like his parents. Life, however, has a way of presenting us with both challenges and opportunities when we least expect them. John was devastated when unexpected mental health problems brought his first-year University studies to a grinding halt. When all appeared lost, the University Medical Officer arranged specialist, professional help which got him through this difficult time. He was allowed to repeat first-year studies and eventually graduated with a BA. Motivated by the treatment and support he received during his illness, John made the somewhat unexpected decision to become a Social Worker. Some years later, when he was working in Belfast, Ulster descended into vicious inter-communal violence, and he regularly witnessed the riots, bombings and gun-fights that were commonplace in the streets where his clients lived. When he transferred to a job in Londonderry things were no better. These were scary and stressful at times. John survived without physical or psychological damage and concedes that this experience may even have been character forming.! Then, when he was offered a job in sub-tropical Brisbane, he took the radical decision to move his wife and three young children half-way across the world to Australia: a country they knew nothing about! John relished this adventure, settled into his new job, and he and his family moved into a new house in the city outskirts. Never, a gifted student, John was surprised when his Australian colleagues encouraged him to undertake part-time, post-graduate studies. He accepted this challenge and eventually gained a PhD. At school, John was always one of the last to finish in cross-country races. In Queensland, however, friends encouraged him to enter "fun runs", and he eventually completed a marathon. John's mental health problems have recurred briefly from time to time; he's had alcohol-related issues, and he has suffered from prostate cancer. First class professional treatment and support is available in Brisbane, and this has enabled him to get him back on track and to enjoy life with his wife and family. Now in the "golden years" of retirement John has written this candid and sometimes hilarious autobiography. He hopes that it will inspire ordinary people, like himself, to live life to the full, but if challenged by health or substance abuse problems to reach out for professional help and support.

Bars, Blues, and Booze collects lively bar tales from the intersection of black and white musical cultures in the South. Many of these stories do not seem dignified, decent, or filled with uplifting euphoria, but they are real narratives of people who worked hard with their hands during the week to celebrate the weekend with music and mind-altering substances. These are stories of musicians who may not be famous celebrities but are men and women deeply occupied with their craft--professional musicians stuck with a day job. The collection also includes stories from fans and bar owners, people vital to shaping a local music scene. The stories explore the "crossroads," that intoxicated intersection of spirituality, race, and music that forms a rich, southern vernacular. In personal narratives, musicians and partygoers relate tales of narrow escape (almost getting busted by the law while transporting moonshine), of desperate poverty (rat-infested kitchens and repossessed cars), of magic (hiring a root doctor to make a charm), and loss (death or incarceration). Here are stories of defiant miscegenation, of forgetting race and going out to eat together after a jam, and then not being served. Assorted boasts of improbable hijinks give the "blue collar" musician a wild, gritty glamour and emphasize the riotous freedom of their fans, who sometimes risk the strong arm of southern liquor laws in order to chase the good times.

Stories of those lost in the gritty and crime-laden asphalt jungle are together in this collection from the acclaimed noir, presented at original size with new wrap-around cover art by Frank Miller. There are all kinds of dark business you might encounter on a cold night in Basin City, and the tales here paint a gloriously dirty portrait. Marv, the hulking ex-con with a condition, has to jog his memory about a certain Saturday night, and then on another evening, he’s after something but he keeps his quest is quiet—sometimes there’s no need for words. Visiting Old Town, where all your dreams could come true, Gail and Miho demonstrate what happens when you don’t play by their rules. Then, hired-hand Blue Eyes makes an important kill—a few, actually. A woman on the run finds a way out . . . A sucker with good intentions gets duped . . . Fat Man and Little Boy are seen on a couple of jobs, and being low-rent hit-men, you can guess what that means. And the dark deeds and dealings stay dark in a few more stories also included in this anthology. The fourth editions of Frank Miller’s hit graphic novel series continue with Volume 6 Booze, Broads, & Bullets. This edition includes a fourteen-page expanded cover and art gallery featuring pieces from previous editions. As an anthology of short tales, it’s a great jumping on point for new readers wondering what Sin City is all about—or longtime readers who can't get enough! FOR MATURE READERS
