A large part of the several chapters was prepared by staff members and printed in the February, 1936, number of N orth Carolina, Education, official organ of The North Carolina Education Association. These articles have been slightly rewritten and reprinted here for historical purposes. This treatise is not presumed to be complete, but is intended Simply to touch some of the recorded facts which happened largely during the present century. It is to be hoped that this effort has been worthwhile, and that when the historian comes to-tell the story of public education for this period, he will find this report of some value.
