Excerpt from Third Biennial Report of the Railroad Commission of the State of Mississippi: For the Two Years Ending June 30th, 1891 Acting on the belief that the statistical and other informa tion presented in the appendix to this report will be more useful and interesting than a review in narrative form Of the condition of the railroad system in this state, this part of our report will be devoted mainly to the work of the Board dur ing the period named. By the amendatory acts of the Legislature since the date of our last report, the scope of the duties of the Commission has been so enlarged that, in addition to the supervision of the rates of transportation of passengers and freight, secar ing proper and suitable depot and station facilities, bulle tin boards denoting delays of trains. Posting of tariffs of passenger and freight charges, inspection of railroads and investigation of accidents to trains attended with loss of life or serious personal injury it is now provided (act ap proved, February 22, 1890) that it Shall be unlawful for rail road companies in this State to abolish or disuse any depot without the consent of the Commission. Jurisdiction is also given in cases where there' Is a failure to furnish a sufficient number of passenger coaches to comfortably seat the passen gers, and to cases of insecure bridges, trestles, tunnels, and road-beds.
