Excerpt from The Teaching of Manual Arts The courses of study contained herein are not alone the individual drafts, of the authors, but are the result of revi sions and combinations of courses of study made and adopted by different associations which have given special attention to such courses during the past few years. The courses pre sented are suggestive only and should be regarded as such. They should express close coordination in the handling of all manual arts materials. The illustrations are introduced as a supplementary text. They suggest the type of work considered in the courses of study outlined and represent good examples of present day design and construction. Excerpt from The Educational Meaning of Manual Arts and Industries It would be presumptuous to assume that this brief treatment exhausts the subject, or that on any phase of the question the last word has been said. The book is but forth in the hope that it contributes something to a clearer understanding and a more judicious promotion of a great movement. It aims to help those who, like myself, are working on the problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Manual Arts for Vocational Ends If one is to receive a profitable return from a wage earning occupation he must prepare particularly to do what is required of those engaged in the occupation. A vocational tendency, therefore, must obtain somewhere in the process of education. Inasmuch as the large majority of those at any time enrolled in the public schools must find a means of livelihood early in life, it is imperative that the public schools, even in the lower grades, offer an opportunity for vocational work. It is because of this necessity, and because America is so largely industrial that industrial education has recently become prominent as a subject not only for discussion in educational circles but for action in legislative bodies. Believing that the manual arts should and may have a prominent place in that branch of vocational education known as industrial education, the author has urged upon his auditors in classroom and lecture room the need of a reorganization and an extension of the manual arts to meet the needs of the newer education. If by means of publication his appeal can be made to a larger number of maple, this book will serve its purpose.
