Excerpt from The American Chestnut, a Bibliography: A Bibliography of References to Castanea Dentata and Other Chestnut Species, and on Chestnut Blight and Its Causal Pathogen of the Fungal Genus Endothia or Cryphonectria In working with a bibliography over a period of 12 years, trends in research and publication become apparent. Jean Q. Wade carefully tabulated the entries by time period and subject, providing the data for a few observations here: The interest in fungi, particularly pathogens, was strong in the 19th Century and continues today. In contrast, nucleic acid and other biochemical studies are relatively recent. In the early blight period, there was a major effort to understand the life cycle, spread, and pathogenic action of the blight fungus.
