Excerpt from Benevolent Institutions, 1910 The inmates were classified by sex, age, color, na tivity and race, naturalization, legal residence, liter acy, education, ability to speak English, marital con dition, health (whether in good health, ill, insane, blind, deaf-mums, idiots, crippled), occupations prior to admission to institutions, and cause of depend ence. The classification of children in institutions was further extended to cover the questions of legitimacy, orphanage, abandonment, and institutional births. The statistics were arranged in a great variety of combinations, so as to make the presentation as com plete as possible. It appeared, however, that the replies were by no means satisfactory, and although the percentage of error, in the view of the writer of the report, was not such as to invalidate conclusions, it was large enough to raise a question as to the real value of the investigation, in view of the labor and expense involved and the degree of completeness attained. Excerpt from The Philanthropist, or Institutions of Benevolence The following little treatise is presented to a benevolent public, for their candid peru sal. As the subject is plain and simple, so also is the style; and it is hoped that the mat ter will not be less interesting on this account. I make no sort of apology for keeping my name from the public view. It is' of no con sequence who is the author, provided the mat ter be both true and useful; and if it should prove to be neither, my name would add no thing to its merit. This rich history chronicles the prominent role of Catholic women religious in establishing the hospitals at the core of New York City's extensive Catholic medical network. Beginning with the opening of St. Vincent's Hospital in 1849, Bernadette McCauley relates how determined and pragmatic women of faith worked over the next eighty years to place the Catholic Church in the mainstream of American medicine. Exploring the differences and similarities between Catholic hospitals and other hospitals, McCauley describes the particular cultural sensibility and management style that informed Catholic health care and gauges the ultimate success of Catholic efforts. Visionary sisters established, managed, and staffed the hospitals, and they sat on hospital boards and served as administrators at a time when women rarely occupied positions of leadership in business. McCauley illustrates how they at once embraced the world of God and the world of man, playing an unheralded role in the development of the modern hospital while serving the daily needs of New York's immigrant poor. Encompassing such issues as immigration, the education of nurses and doctors, hospital care and organization, and the role of women in the Catholic church, this extensive study is a valuable resource for scholars and students in the history of medicine, history of nursing, American religion, and women's history.
