Beamforming: Sensor Signal Processing for Defence Applications presents a range of important research contributions concerned with sensor array signal processing and, in particular, with the superresolution beamformers fundamental to many civilian and defence applications. Both space and space-time (STAP) beamforming algorithms and their application to radar systems are considered with emphasis given to 'look-down' airborne radars, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), arrayed MIMO radar and a number of common wake-wave detection algorithms for two-dimensional SAR imagery. Furthermore, ocean towed arrays, which find applications in a variety of areas such as defence, oil and gas exploration, and geological and marine life studies, are also considered paying particular attention to receiver positional uncertainties resulting from the array's flexible structure. Array geometrical and electrical uncertainties, design of auto-calibration algorithms, beamforming 'pointing' error uncertainties and robustification issues are also presented. This book is self-contained and unified in its presentation, and comprehensively covers some of the classic and fundamental models of beamforming for sensor signal processing. It is suitable as an advanced textbook for graduate students and researchers in the area of signal processing, as well as a reference book for engineers in the defence industry.

The latest research and developments in robust adaptivebeamforming Recent work has made great strides toward devising robust adaptivebeamformers that vastly improve signal strength against backgroundnoise and directional interference. This dynamic technology hasdiverse applications, including radar, sonar, acoustics, astronomy, seismology, communications, and medical imaging. There are alsoexciting emerging applications such as smart antennas for wirelesscommunications, handheld ultrasound imaging systems, anddirectional hearing aids. Robust Adaptive Beamforming compiles the theories and work ofleading researchers investigating various approaches in onecomprehensive volume. Unlike previous efforts, these pioneeringstudies are based on theories that use an uncertainty set of thearray steering vector. The researchers define their theories, explain their methodologies, and present their conclusions. Methodspresented include: * Coupling the standard Capon beamformers with a spherical orellipsoidal uncertainty set of the array steering vector * Diagonal loading for finite sample size beamforming * Mean-squared error beamforming for signal estimation * Constant modulus beamforming * Robust wideband beamforming using a steered adaptive beamformerto adapt the weight vector within a generalized sidelobe cancellerformulation Robust Adaptive Beamforming provides a truly up-to-date resourceand reference for engineers, researchers, and graduate students inthis promising, rapidly expanding field.

Modern noise research and assessment techniques are commonly used in the workplace and our personal living environment. Occupational Noise and Workplace Acoustics presents new, innovative, advanced research and evaluation methods of parameters characterizing acoustic field and noise in the working environment, as well as acoustic properties of rooms and noise reduction measures. This includes acoustic field visualization methods, field imaging techniques, wireless sensor networks, and the Internet of Things (IoT); optimization methods using genetic algorithms; acoustic quality assessment methods for rooms; and methods for measuring ultrasonic noise in the frequency range of 10-40 kHz. This book is a valuable resource for individuals and students interested in the areas of acoustic and sound engineering as it provides: The latest techniques and methods in the field of noise reduction and improvement of acoustic comfort, Innovative and advanced acoustic field visualization techniques for those with an auditory impairment, Explains noise reduction through proper workplace design, Discusses use of wireless sensor networks and the IoT for monitoring noise, and Provides acoustic quality assessment methods. "The authors’ intention to expound on advanced issues in a lucid and accessible way was rewarded with success. In the book, an expert will find a number of hints helpful in solving actual problems, whereas a layperson will be able to form a view on challenges facing contemporary technology. What should also be emphasized is the book’s soundness in documenting these advanced theses and postulates with diligently conducted empirical research. Despite a wide thematic range, the book is written consistently and under no circumstances can be considered a collection of randomly selected problems. The content corresponds fully to the title. The authors are consistent in acquainting the reader with topical scientific issues concerning assessment of acoustic hazards and the methodology of combating them." —Professor Zbigniew Dąbrowski, BEng, PhD, DSc, Warsaw University of Technology
