This book covers Weapon Retention and Disarming issues for law enforcement officer. The goal is to develop the officer's understanding and awareness regarding firearms retention techniques, and to enhance Weapon Retention and Disarming abilities. Law enforcement is normally achieved without any danger to the officer or other citizens. However, police officers occasionally encounter persons who will resist violently in order to evade detection and prosecution. Officers or civilians may be killed or injured by offenders who take and use an officer's firearm. In some close encounters, a suspect may try to grab the officer's sidearm. Then the officer's equipment, stance and his/her ability to react may literally decide his/her fate. Loss of the officer's gun could mean the loss of his/her life. Officers must develop a defensive awareness that their weapon can be snatched. They should learn some basic techniques to regain control of the firearm once it has been snatched from them. In extreme cases, the officer has to deal with the threat of deadly violence, i.e. disarming a suspect pointing a firearm. Any attempt to disarm a suspect who is pointing a firearm at the officer is a last resort measure. If an officer is alert and attentive to potential dangers, this last resort will never have to be employed. This chapter will focus on weapon retention (defensive awareness, regain control) and describe some techniques for disarming which must only be used as last resort. Topics and techniques presented in this book will be of both great interest and great value to trainers and students of law enforcement.

This text presents techniques and information to help police officers avoid being disarmed by a suspect (take-away incidents) and then injured or killed with their own or their partner's weapon. The opening chapter on conditioning emphasizes the importance of the officer's mental as well as physical readiness. Strength, endurance, and agility requirements, an integral part of police testing and academy regimen, are necessary for the survival of active duty officers. The times within the arrest procedure when an assault is most likely to occur are identified, and ways to distinguish between passive and potentially violent subjects or situations are discussed. Fourteen case studies illustrate the errors, lack of preparation, poor training, or other deficiencies that make take-away incidents possible. Specific lessons to be learned are enumerated along with each case: search the suspects before requesting identification; never leave one officer alone with the suspect; never cuff a suspect's hand in front of his body, etc. The chapter on 'games cons play' uses photographs to illustrate the varied techniques criminals use against police officers in confrontations. Next, the Downey-Roth weapon retention technique is introduced. Its chief principle is that since action is faster than reaction, violation of the danger zone (the area within which the officer is vulnerable to a suspect's grab or kick) should be guarded against. The three factors present in weapon retention -- distance and timing, holsters that can prevent the illicit withdrawal of the weapon, and techniques that are well-rehearsed and answer countermeasures are outlined. Photographs and case studies illustrate the nine techniques, including countering approaches from the front, rear, and side to seize either holstered or drawn weapons.

This book covers "Officer Survival Skills, Use of Force, Soft Empty Hand Control, Hard Empty Hand Control, Weapon Retention and Gun Disarming, Handcuffing, Conducting Suspect Searches, and Defensive Baton " issues for law enforcement officer. The most important priority of the officer is able to survive in dangerous situations. These techniques provide officers self-confidence, which is needed to "win". Law enforcement officers are authorized to use a range of force options to preserve the peace, prevent crimes, maintain order, and apprehend suspects. Soft empty hand techniques are the first option of physical response used to restrain a person who is resisting. Hard Empty Hand Control techniques are defined as striking techniques. In some close encounters, a suspect may try to grab the officer's sidearm. Officers must develop a defensive awareness that their weapon can be snatched. Handcuffs are temporary restraining devices designed to control the movements of a subject. Body searching is a careful, systematic examination of the suspect at the scene of a crime, or immediately after apprehension. A trained officer who is proficient in the use of the baton is better able to protect himself and is less likely to resort to the use of his firearm. Topics and techniques presented in this book will be of both great interest and great value to trainers and students of law enforcement.

This book covers "Weapon Retention and Gun Disarming, Handcuffing, Conducting Suspect Searches, and Defensive Baton" subjects for law enforcement officer. In some close encounters, a suspect may try to grab the officer's sidearm. Loss of the officer's gun could mean the loss of his/her life. The officer or civilians may be killed or injured by offenders who take and use an officer's firearm. Officers must develop a defensive awareness that their weapon can be snatched. Handcuffs are temporary restraining devices designed to control the movements of a subject. However, they do not entirely immobilize a suspect. Its proper use and application is crucial for the safety of the officer, subject, and public. Body searching is a vague topic. It is a careful, systematic examination of the suspect at the scene of a crime, or immediately after apprehension. Failure to conduct a proper search could cost an officer's or civilians' life. Modern law enforcement tool, baton, has been developed to increase officers' ability to protect themselves, particularly in those cases not justifying the use of deadly force. A trained officer who is proficient in the use of the baton is better able to protect himself and is less likely to resort to the use of his firearm. Topics and techniques presented in this book will be of both great interest and great value to trainers and students of law enforcement.

When it comes to the defensive use of firearms, the skill of not being shot is at least as important as the skill of shooting. Moving to cover and shooting from cover should be a constant part of Handgun drilling, but unfortunately, most exercises don't emphasize this aspect of defense. In a perfect world, the first shots a beginner fires would be from behind cover. Seeking cover while drawing or firing should be an instinct you are training yourself every time you handle a gun, and if you stand out in the open when shooting drills, you are training yourself to stand out In the open when returning fire, an immobile and easy target, as is very often observed in law enforcement shootings. The antidote is to shoot from cover, from the very outset, and keep it a constant part of your training. As law enforcement training shifts to this paradigm, they observe that officers who come up for qualification are uneasy firing in the open--they instinctively prefer to shoot from Behind cover when it is available. There is very little use of cover in these drills, which is why I mention it here. They can, however, be adapted. It is up to you to give yourself the kind of training you want to have.
