Basic Czech I is a modern textbook of Czech for English-speaking students. It consists of six modules and is based on communication and the comparative approach. It aims to present the basics of the Czech language by means of continuous and systematic acquisition of vocabulary and conversation phrases connected with covered topics: social phrases, around the city and house, restaurant, hobbies, shopping and travelling. Grammar, closely linked to the vocabulary, is a mere means of achieving this goal. Clear charts help the user to remember the covered topics easily. The use of the mediating language is reduced to a minimum; it fulfils the role of an apt explanation. The textbook contains many humorous dialogues. Basic Czech I corresponds with the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The aim of this textbook of Czech for foreigners is to provide a brief introduction to the fundamentals of the language. The book contains six modules; while the first focuses on the Czech alphabet and pronunciation, the remaining chapters always present a common topic which serves as a basis for language practice. The book contains more than 700 words and phrases.

Basic Czech I, a modern textbook of Czech as a foreign language with English explanations, is the first in the Basic Czech series. Based on a comparative approach and focusing on communication aspects, it aims to teach the essentials of the Czech grammar in close connection with common lexical topics and situations. Grammar thus becomes a tool that enables effective communication in carefully selected situations of everyday interactions. The use of English as the language of presentation is limited to the necessary explanations, which makes the textbook a suitable material for use both in the classroom and self-study. To facilitate the acquisition of the covered course material, the book contains clearly arranged charts as well as many humorous dialogues. The audio, key to exercises and supplementary materials on both grammar and conversation are available at this website. Basic Czech I corresponds to the A1 level of the Common European Framework of References for Languages. Audio: https://karolinum.cz/en/information-and-services/mp3-archive

A dramatic account of life in Czechoslovakia's great capital during the Nazi Protectorate With this successor book to Prague in Black and Gold, his account of more than a thousand years of Central European history, the great scholar Peter Demetz focuses on just six short years—a tormented, tragic, and unforgettable time. He was living in Prague then—a "first-degree half-Jew," according to the Nazis' terrible categories—and here he joins his objective chronicle of the city under German occupation with his personal memories of that period: from the bitter morning of March 15, 1939, when Hitler arrived from Berlin to set his seal on the Nazi takeover of the Czechoslovak government, until the liberation of Bohemia in April 1945, after long seasons of unimaginable suffering and pain. Demetz expertly interweaves a superb account of the German authorities' diplomatic, financial, and military machinations with a brilliant description of Prague's evolving resistance and underground opposition. Along with his private experiences, he offers the heretofore untold history of an effervescent, unstoppable Prague whose urbane heart went on beating despite the deportations, murders, cruelties, and violence: a Prague that kept its German- and Czech-language theaters open, its fabled film studios functioning, its young people in school and at work, and its newspapers on press. This complex, continually surprising book is filled with rare human detail and warmth, the gripping story of a great city meeting the dual challenge of occupation and of war.

Benny Lewis, who speaks over ten languages—all self-taught—runs the largest language-learning blog in the world, Fluent In 3 Months. Lewis is a full-time "language hacker," someone who devotes all of his time to finding better, faster, and more efficient ways to learn languages. Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World is a new blueprint for fast language learning. Lewis argues that you don't need a great memory or "the language gene" to learn a language quickly, and debunks a number of long-held beliefs, such as adults not being as good of language learners as children.
