Excerpt from Bankruptcy Legislation and Defaulters in the Legal Profession: Prize Essays, the Prizes Offered by Sir Henry Peek On 29th January, 1878, Sir Henry Peek asked the Solicitor-General in the House of Commons, "Whether he considered it desirable to append in the Law List to the names of solicitors who had become bankrupt, information respecting their bankruptcies; and if he could explain the reason why the names of some solicitors did not appear continuously in the Law List?" The Solicitor-General replied, "That he did not consider it fair to give the proposed information in the Law List, as he did not see why the stigma of bankruptcy should attach to a solicitor for the rest of his life more than to other classes. The absence of some solicitors' names from the Law List was occasioned by their failure to renew their certificates on or before the 1st January." This incident gave rise to a discussion in the principal legal journals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
