It isn't easy for Tori Takahashi and Polly Griffin to be best friends. There are so many differences-how they look, where they live, and how they feel about things. Yet, the thoughtful ways of one and the enthusiasm of the other make for a winning combination. Every week Tori and her mother ride the trolley through Berkeley to Polly's house where Mrs. Takahashi cleans and sews for the Griffins. Tori delights in this magical world, especially planning adventures and sharing secrets with Polly in her bamboo garden. The hot, dry summer of 1923 makes the stalks taller and stronger, just like the girls' friendship. Surprisingly, their biggest adventure is about to begin. All the signs are there: the strange weather, the troubling news delivered by a disagreeable neighbor girl, and a hobo's remarkable gift. Kids nine and up who love The Penderwicks (Birdsall) or Al Capone Does My Shirts (Choldenko) will snatch up The Bamboo Garden, a story of friendship, prejudice and courage.

Bamboo is one of the three most important and well-distributed naturally occurring plant species of Karnataka; the other two species are teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) and sandal (Santalum album L.). While bamboo is fairly abundant in the deciduous forests of the Western Ghats region, it can also be found in interior Karnataka as well as in the Eastern Plains. However, large-scale utilization of the state’s enormous natural bamboo resources is not feasible in view of certain issues related to policy and management of the forests. In light of the restricted availability of bamboo from the public forests, growing bamboo under agroforestry and farm forestry to meet the demands of people and industries assumes significance. The book, Bamboo in the Backyard, attempts at providing an overview of the bamboo-bearing forests of Karnataka, their past working, and present status. As its title suggests, the book underscores the need to bring bamboo closer to the people. In recent years, agroforestry, farm forestry and dry-land horticulture have made tremendous strides in Karnataka. Adding bamboo to the list of tree species that are being planted by farmers will add to the plant diversity in their farmlands and aid in enhancing the greenery of the agrarian landscape. Besides supporting and complementing agricultural operations, bamboo can contribute significantly to the farmers’ overall income and general welfare.

Growing Bamboo for ProfitBecause bamboo is one of the most widely-used landscaping plants, there is a steady demand for popular varieties. One of the best ways to get in on the bamboo boom is with container-grown bamboo plants. Why container-grown? By growing bamboo in containers - typically 2 to 5 gallon pots - you'll be able to grow more healthy plants in a smaller space, cut down on labor, and have a plant that is ready to load in a customer's car quickly and easily. Growing bamboo for profit is an ideal part-time business if you have limited time, as bamboo plants, especially in containers, are low-maintenance. Unlike seasonal crops such as flowers and vegetables, you get paid even if all your plants don't sell this year. Instead, they just keep growing, and will be more valuable next year. You can start a bamboo growing business with just a small amount of money - just enough to buy your "mother" plants that can be divided to produce more plants to sell. What You'll Learn: Each chapter covers all the basic information you need to get started growing these profitable bamboo varieties, including: Best dwarf, midsize and timber bamboos to grow - 33 in all, with descriptions and photos. How to start and set up your bamboo nursery - water, spacing, potting soils, containers and more. How to grow and propagate bamboo. Eight ways to market your bamboo. Wholesale sources for hundreds of bamboo varieties & grower supplies. Grower forums, organizations and videos.
