This is one of the most significant military books of the twentieth century. By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War. Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Guderian's book argued, quite clearly, how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

When the first Harrier strike fighter was introduced by the Royal Air Force in the late 1960s, it was hailed as a technological breakthrough with its speed, vertical, short takeoff and landing capability (V/STOL). Today, the Harrier II is one of the top weapons of choice for ground troops in Iraq and Afghanistan who need effective air support. This book chronicles the incredible development of this tactical fixed wing aircraft, a journey that, in the author's opinion, was successful solely because of the unswerving commitment of the U.S. Marine Corps. In tracing the Harrier II's history, Lon Nordeen highlights the teamwork, creativity, and innovation that went into the design, development, fielding, and operation of this unique aircraft. The story begins with the development of the U.S. Marine Corps air-ground team close air support concepts in the 1920s, on the battlefields of the Pacific in the Second World War and the Korean conflict. Later in Vietnam, efforts were directed at improving the aviators' response time to calls for air support. Seeing V/STOL tactical airplanes as the only practical solution to this problem, the Marine Corps received their first AV-8As in 1971 and then set out to improve the Harrier's capability. This is the Harrier II's story, including its near-cancellation in the late 1970s during the Carter Administration, developmental challenges in the early 1980s, international growth path with the addition of night attack capability and radar to its success in the Gulf War, Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. This book includes interviews and insights from those involved- from pilots and military commanders to engineers and production personnel and even tothose who opposed the program. It is the first book to be written about the Harrier II from the U.S. Marine Corps perspective that also discusses the selection and operational use of the aircraft by the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.

This report examines of the progress being made in implementing MoDs decisions regarding the future support of military aircraft - maintenance lines being reduced to "forward" and "depth" - and the implications of these decisions for the Defence Aviation and Repair Agency (DARA). For fast jet aircraft (Harrier GR9 and Tornado GR4), depth support will transfer from DARA St Athan, South Wales, where it is carried out largely by civilian tradesmen, to RAF Main Operating Bases where it will be carried out by RAF tradesmen supplemented by tradesmen from the aircraft manufacturer. For rotary wing aircraft (helicopters), depth support will, by contrast, be provided at DARA Fleetlands, Hampshire, by RAF tradesmen and DARA civilian tradesmen. The Committee is concerned that these inconsistent arrangements will not be sustainable over the long term. The new arrangements for support carry risks: the long term sustainability of efficiency programmes; potential over-dependency on industry, and the capability of the RAFs new support processes to meet surge demands. The Committee recommends an independent audit of the Harrier programme, to ensure that the support is being provided in a more efficient and cost effective manner than before. The future of DARA is uncertain: some of its businesses are to be closed down; others are to be market tested. The prospects for the DARA St Athan site, including its recently completed Superhangar facility costing over £100m, are in particular doubt. The Committee finds incomprehensible MoDs decision to go ahead with building the Superhangar at a time when it was reviewing its logistic support provision, and recommends an investigation by the National Audit Office and the Wales Audit Office.

Like fighters, many bomber projects were drawn by British aircraft manufacturing companies in times of potential or actual combat. While names such as Canberra, Vulcan, Victor, TSR2, Harrier and Tornado are known to many as they made it into the skies, the fact that so many other projects from different companies remained on the drawing board provides a rich diversity of 'might-have-been' aircraft designs ripe for coverage. As with British Secret Projects 1: Jet Fighters Since 1950, the author has researched extensively with particular emphasis on the design and development work that took place within various tender design competitions. Many little-known projects are included that help to illustrate how British bomber development changed against a backdrop of political upheaval, shrinking defense expenditure and technological advancement including supersonic flight, nuclear weapons and VTOL. The story which starts with Britain's quest for a jet-powered Mosquito replacement and concludes with reference to the next leap forward, FOAS, an unarmed bomber flown by pilots on the ground. Accompanied by detailed appendices of all British post-war bomber projects and specifications, color photographs and artwork, British Secret Projects 2: Jet Bombers Since 1949 provides a wealth of detailed information on the fascinating world of Cold War secret bomber projects.
