Bizarre celebrity thefts are occurring all over the world: A piece of hair from John Lennon, Julia Roberts' bed linens, and Sheela Marks, Hollywood's hottest actress, is constantly being approached in odd ways by obsessed fans literally out for a piece of her. Paranoid and desperate for her own safety, she turns to her security expert, ex-Marine Lymon Bridges, who must match wits with his most formidable opponent yet. One of Bridges's new recruits, Christal Anaya, was a hot shot FBI agent who recently lost her job due to a major slip-up during one of the agencies most sought after cases. Now Bridges hopes to use her investigative expertise to unveil the perpetrator behind these "attacks." But what she finds is far stranger than anything coming out of Hollywood. A major genetics firm has been all over the world, kidnapping the best genetic scientists to use their expertise in a bizarre black market trade of celebrity DNA, and its megalomaniacal mastermind will stop at nothing until the world is as beautiful as Hollywood's A-list. Ten papers from 1992 symposia at Dartmouth College and Princeton University are augmented by an original chapter and a translation of a Greek article, to explore the myth and cult of Athena, contests and prizes associated with her worship, and art and politics generated around her. Among the topics are women in the Panathenaic and other festivals, the iconography of shield devices and column-mounted statues on amphoras, and the Panatheniaia in the age of Perikles. The three-volume set LNCS 6361, 6362 and 6363 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2010, held in Beijing, China, in September 2010. Based on rigorous peer reviews, the program committee carefully selected 251 revised papers from 786 submissions for presentation in three volumes. The first volume includes 84 papers organized in topical sections on computer-aided diagnosis, planning and guidance of interventions, image segmentation, image reconstruction and restoration, functional and diffusion-weighted MRI, modeling and simulation, instrument and patient localization and tracking, quantitative image analysis, image registration, computational and interventional cardiology, and diffusion tensor MR imaging and analysis.

This is the 3rd edition of a research monograph providing a synthesis of old research on the foundations of dynamic programming (DP), with the modern theory of approximate DP and new research on semicontractive models. It aims at a unified and economical development of the core theory and algorithms of total cost sequential decision problems, based on the strong connections of the subject with fixed point theory. The analysis focuses on the abstract mapping that underlies DP and defines the mathematical character of the associated problem. The discussion centers on two fundamental properties that this mapping may have: monotonicity and (weighted sup-norm) contraction. It turns out that the nature of the analytical and algorithmic DP theory is determined primarily by the presence or absence of these two properties, and the rest of the problem's structure is largely inconsequential. New research is focused on two areas: 1) The ramifications of these properties in the context of algorithms for approximate DP, and 2) The new class of semicontractive models, exemplified by stochastic shortest path problems, where some but not all policies are contractive. The 3rd edition is very similar to the 2nd edition, except for the addition of a new chapter (Chapter 5), which deals with abstract DP models for sequential minimax problems and zero-sum games, The book is an excellent supplement to several of our books: Neuro-Dynamic Programming (Athena Scientific, 1996), Dynamic Programming and Optimal Control (Athena Scientific, 2017), Reinforcement Learning and Optimal Control (Athena Scientific, 2019), and Rollout, Policy Iteration, and Distributed Reinforcement Learning (Athena Scientific, 2020).

Why are there so few women scientists? Persisting differences between women's and men's experiences in science make this question as relevant today as it ever was. This book sets out to answer this question, and to propose solutions for the future. Based on extensive research, it emphasizes that science is an intensely social activity. Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, scientists and their institutions are not immune to the prejudices of society as a whole. By presenting women's experiences at all key career stages - from childhood to retirement - the authors reveal the hidden barriers, subtle exclusions and unwritten rules of the scientific workplace, and the effects, both professional and personal, that these have on the female scientist. This important book should be read by all scientists - both male and female - and sociologists, as well as women thinking of embarking on a scientific career.
