The Filipino Migration Experience introduces a new dimension to the usual depiction of migrants as disenfranchised workers or marginal ethnic groups. Mina Roces suggests alternative ways of conceptualizing Filipino migrantsas critics of the family and cultural constructions of sexuality, as consumers and investors, as philanthropists, as activists, and, as historians. They have been able to transform fundamental social institutions and well-entrenched traditional norms, as well as alter the business, economic and cultural landscapes of both the homeland and the host countries to which they have migrated. Mina Roces tells the story of the Filipino migration experience from the perspective of the migrants themselves, tapping into hitherto underused primary sources from the "migrant archives" and more than 70 interviews. Bringing the fields of Filipino migration studies and Filipina/o/x American studies together, this book analyzes some of the areas where Filipino migrants have forever changed the status quo.

The topics in this book apply to Filipinos in general terms. It is not meant to stereotype Filipinos, and should not be construed in any way as truth for all Filipinos. Everyone is unique, and certainly your Filipina (Pinay) girlfriend's response to a situation would vary depending on where she was raised (city or province/country side) and how she was raised. Hopefully, this book will ease the culture shock you might have in visiting a country that is different from your own, and help you understand your girlfriend's background, and why she acts, talks, and responds the way she does. Some topics include short anecdotes from the authors' personal experiences.50 Things Topics:The Country 1) Island Living 2) Hot or Not 3) Filipino English 4) Country of Extremes 5) Religion 6) Transportation 7) Organized Chaos 8) CurrencyThe Culture 9) Pasalubong10) Game On11) Holidays and Fiestas12) Christmas13) Hospitality14) Superstition15) Pouty Point16) Language Nuances17) Balikbayan Box18) Smile, you're on camera19) Eyebrows Up20) Teasing21) Talk of the Town22) Will you Marry Me23) Small Talk24) Hello, Eat25) Romantics at Heart26) Bro-mance27) Karaoke28) Laugh Out Loud29) Rich and Famous30) Price of Fame31) Whitening Stuff32) Birthday Treat33) Conservative34) PDA35) Bless36) Loud Voice37) Confrontation38) Filipino Time39) Filipino Food40) Gratitude to Parents41) Bayanihan42) PamamanhikanThe Girl43) Soap Opera44) He said, She said45) Single Living with Parents46) YayaSome Things to Consider47) Real Filipina48) Street Food49) Bottled Water50) Plug-in Ready

This title was first published in 2002: The issue of immigration and crime in all of its many contexts and forms, is a problem which affects numerous countries throughout the world. In many countries, immigrants have been accused of disproportionate involvement in crime while, in others, immigrants are often claimed to be the victims of criminal offenders, as well as indifferent criminal justice systems. The subjects covered within this informative collection include the offending and victimization rates of immigrants and their dependants, institutional racism, human trafficking/smuggling and ethnic conflicts. In particular, the problems faced by female immigrants are addressed in detail. Whilst some papers look at the issues facing particular countries, such as Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Israel and Turkey, others adopt a more comparative approach. Migration, Culture Conflict and Crime is an essential and compelling read for all those with a strong interest in this important area. Not only does it significantly advance our scientific knowledge concerning the relationship between immigration, crime and justice, but it also sets forth a number of proposals which, if implemented, could address many of the problems found in these areas.

This study uses a combination of participatory action research methods and interview techniques involving 40 Filipino mail-order brides to form a picture of their overall economic & social situation in Canada. It begins with background on the research and the project methodology. This is followed by a review of the literature on mail-order brides & international marriages; information on the global & historical context for the arrival of Filipino mail-order brides in Canada, including the root causes of migration from the Philippines, immigration policies, and the growth of the Canadian Filipino community. Section 5 recounts six stories of Filipino mail-order brides and section 6 presents a profile of the 40 study participants. Section 7 presents study findings with regard to the women's situation in the Philippines, the bride-shopping transaction, and the women's situation in Canada, with emphasis on their vulnerability to exploitation & abuse. The final section draws on the findings of the study to make recommendations for policy development in five areas: immigration, violence against women & trafficking in women, women's economic security, human rights, and the legal system.
