For example, in 1819 Ferdinand Ernst (1903: 161 - 162) observed: For whoever owns the woodlands of the Elkhart controls at the same time the greater part of the large and rich prairie surrounding it, where, on account of the scarcity of wood, it would be difficult to establish a farm.
