Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Geologist: For the Year 1880 The nature and extent of the various Geological formations of the State, and especially the rocky strata beneath the soil or superficial earth, have been described in the several reports of the Geological Survey, and their outlines have been represented on the Geological maps accompanying these reports. These maps do not, however, indicate the nature or extent of the surface earth. The earths, sands, gravels and boulders, more or less mixed, and irregularly dis tributed upon the older beds and strata, constitute an important feature of the surface and give character to the soil throughout large areas. Over large areas they cover the rock so deeply as to conceal it and render the determination of the older formation extremely difficult. And the tracing of Geological boundaries is, in places, done with much uncertainty on account of these thick surface deposits. The earth and imbedded rock fragments which result from the decompositions and disintegration of rocks in place must not be confounded with them. The former are native; the latter are foreign - erratics. The modification of the original Geological features consists in the rounded and polished ledges or roches mou tonnece; in the softened contour lines of hills and mountains, as well as in the rocky slopes clothed with loose materials. And the soil and the ora are also determined to some extent by the super ficial covering. The description of these surface beds and deposits and the modified outcrops of the Older formations, constitutes what may be termed the Geology of the Surface. In this report the con sideration of the earth's originating in place is omitted. The surface deposits here considered belong to what is termed by Geologists the Post Tertiary or Quaternary Period. Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Geologist: For the Year 1905 Early in the year the Boonton, dover-stanhope and Chester sheets of the large scale atlas were received from the lithographer and placed on sale. Twenty-one sheets on this scale are now completed and ready for distribution. In April, Sheet 23, northern Bergen and Passaic counties, with adjoining portions of New York State, and Sheet 28, the region from Trenton to New Brunswick, were issued, and just before the close of the fiscal year (october 31st). Sheet 33, Barnegat Bay and the eastern portion Of Ocean County, and Sheet 37, Cape May County, were published. All of these sheets are on the scale of one inch per mile, and take the place of the older sheets, which were somewhat differently arranged. Complete revision of all cultural features and some changes in the topography were made preparatory to the publication of these new editions. Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Geologist for the Year 1904 Library - T he library is maintained for the benefit of the workers on the Survey, and is composed chiefly of volumes on geology, mineralogy and allied branches. It is supplemented by reports and pamphlets received in exchange for the Survey publications, as well as by purchases. During the past year the accessions were 49 bound volumes, 130 unbound volumes, 118 pamphlets and 93 maps. Laboratory - For many years the Survey has been hampered by lack of suitable accommodations for its work. The office on the third floor of the State House is no larger than is necessary for the administrative work. The space in the basement allotted to the Survey, is sufficient only for the storage of its duplicate collections, its maps and reports and for shipping facilities. There has been no place regularly available for the examination and study of materials, or for laboratory work of any description. In fact it has at times been difficult to obtain desk room for mem bers of the Survey engaged in preparing reports. In part this difficulty has been met by the employment of scientific assistants, who were connected with various colleges and who had, there fore, laboratory and office facilities in which the work could be done. In spite of the relief thus obtained, the work has been seriously hampered at times by the congestion in the office. Excerpt from Annual Report of the State Geologist for the Year 1883 This survey is made as a part of the United States Coast and Geo detic Survey, and at the expense of the United States Government. It is done under the direction of our Geological Survey, by authority of the act of Congress which directs the Coast and Geodetic Survey to aid States which are carrying on geological and topographical sur veys. The accompanying small State map has marked on it the points which have been accurately determined in latitude and longi tude in this survey. Those marked with a small triangle are primary stations which have been occupied, and from which angles have been measured to numerous other points. The numbers on points refer' to their names which are given in the following list. Those marked by a dot are tertiary stations. No numbers are attached to them. They have been observed upon from the primary stations, but have not been occupied and used as stations for measuring angles. A list of those which have been observed upon from the High Tome and High Mountain, during the past summer, are given below. The points which have been selected for primary stations in the southern part of the State, but have not yet been occupied for meas uring angles, are each designated by a small circle and a number, and they are set down in the list with the other primary stations.
