High quality reproducible particle velocity data were obtained from these experiments. We show that an effective stress law coupled with the irreversible collapse of air-filled porosity provide a very simple, straightforward explanation of this data. These results have served to reenforce our confidence in the validity of these models and their importance in determining seismic coupling. (Author).

The first report describes the effect of different elastic-ideally plastic constitutive model formulations on calculated ground shock, while the second report describes the effect of different bottom boundary conditions. The report documents the results of a parameter study conducted to determine the effects of using different types of nonlinear constitutive models to fit a given set of soil property data in calculations of high-explosive, airblast-induced, superseismic ground shock. The main objective of this workshop was to provide a forum for the exchange of information and views on major issues relating to the fundamentals of character izing the inelastic constitutive material behavior. Comments on the Aims of the Workshop, by Drs. William Snowden and Thomas Bache, pp. 1-5, outline reasons for holding this workshop, and provide further background. The format of the workshop was designed to optimize the interaction between researchers whose primary interest is material characterization and numerical analysts whose primary interest is the development and practical use of large computer codes. The program of the workshop and a list of the workshop partic ipants are found at the end of these proceedings.

DOWNLOAD EBOOK →Shock Waves in Condensed Matter – 1983 covers the proceedings of the American Physical Society Topical Conference, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico on July 18-21, 1983. The book focuses on the response of matter to dynamic high pressure and temperature. The selection first elaborates on the review of theoretical calculations of phase transitions and comparisons with experimental results; theoretical and experimental studies of shock-compressed benzene and polybutene; and theory of the iron equation of state and melting curve to very high pressures. The text then ponders on nonhydrostatic effects in stress-wave induced phase transformation of calcite; Bauschinger effect model suitable for use in large computer codes; and strain rate sensitivity prediction for porous bed compaction. The manuscript takes a look at flaw nucleation and energetics of dynamic fragmentation, shock loading behavior of fused quartz, and aluminum damage simulation in high-velocity impact. Shock wave diagnostics by time-resolved infrared radiometry and non-linear Raman spectroscopy; Raman scattering temperature measurement behind a shock wave; and experiments and simulation on laser-driven shock wave evolution in aluminum targets are also discussed. The selection is a dependable reference for scientists and readers interested in the response of matter when exposed to dynamic high pressure and temperature.

The topics covered are related to the stages of analysis: 1. Input parameter selection, by reviewing the in-situ and laboratory tests used to determine dynamic soil properties as well as the methods to compile and model the dynamic soil properties from literature;2. Input ground motion; 3. Theoretical background on the equations of motion and methods for solving them; 4. The mechanism of damping and how this is modeled in the equations of motions; 5. Detailed analysis and discussion of results of selected case studies which provide valuable information on the problem of seismic ground response analysis from both a theoretical and practical point of view.
