Excerpt from To the People of Alabama: An Address by the Alabama Education Committee Indeed, the State should do its part, but the history of education elsewhere proves conclusively that it is an unwise and hurt ful policy to look to that source for every thing needed. Wherever such a policy has prevailed, the people have come gradually to rely upon the general government for the performance of duties that should be regard ed as individual or local. If we would meet the obligation that presses upon us, we must modify this policy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama for Thirty Years IT is deemed necessary to state, that the Author was requested by a number of friends who knew his long connection with the Government, to prepare Reminiscences of Public Men in Alabama, as a contribution to the history of the times, which could not fail to be of general interest. Prompted by this sug gestion, he ventured upon the task, believing that it was a duty he owed his fellow-citizens to lay before them the results of his observation and experience during a period which embraced the most distinguished actors on the public stage, and the most stirring events which have occurred since the State passed from its Terri torial condition. His memory has thus been exercised to gather up and preserve, in the form of narrative and description, many things which otherwise would have perished, as no man living, except himself, had the same opportunities to acquire, by personal contact with men, the minute knowledge embodied in this work. Excerpt from Correspondence Respecting the Alabama My Lord, Legation of the United States, London, January 20, 1864. I have the honour to submit to your Lordship's consideration copies of certain papers relating, to the case of the barque Sea Bride, of Boston, captured by the Alabama. It is affirmed in the depositions making a part of these papers that the Sea Bride was taken within the maritime jurisdiction of Great Britain, in Table Bay, at the Cape of Good Hope. It is presumed that if this fact can be established Her Majesty's Government will not hesitate to accord that full reparation to the claimants for this lawless proceeding which is justly their due. Should it, however, turn out on a fuller investigation of the facts that the capture was not made within the jurisdiction of Great Britain, I am nevertheless instructed to present the claim under the general argument set forth in the note which I had the honour to address to your Lordship on the 23rd of October last.
