ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 167 In this 167th issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the story of Allerleirauh. A king promised his dying wife that he would not marry unless to a woman as beautiful as she was. He realises that the only woman that would not break the promise was his own daughter. The daughter tries to avoid the wedding by asking for three dresses, one as golden as the sun, one as silver as moon, and one as dazzling as the stars, and a mantle made from the fur of every kind of bird and animal in the kingdom. When her father provides them castle on the eve of the wedding, she runs from the castle and sleeps in the forest. A prince, hunting with his dogs, finds her and she asks him to have pity on her and give her a place in his kitchens. Because she gave no name, she was called "All-Kinds-of-Fur" or Allerleirauh. The prince plans a ball and the princess sneaks in wearing her silver dress......……. Download and read this story to find out what happens when she walks in to the ball. INCLUDES LINKS TO DOWNLOAD 8 FREE STORIES Each issue also has a "WHERE IN THE WORLD - LOOK IT UP" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. The place, town or city is relevant to the story. HINT - use Google maps. Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories". It is believed that folklore and tales are believed to have originated in India and made their way overland along the Silk and Spice routes and through the Middle East and Central Asia before arriving in Europe. Even so, this does not cover all folklore from all four corners of the world. Indeed folklore, legends and myths from Africa, Australia, Polynesia, and some from Asia too, can be altogether quite different and seem to have originated on the whole from separate reservoirs of lore, legend and culture.

It is rather poignant that this collection of Folk and Fairy Tales from the Flanders region of Belgium was published in 1918, for in the closing stage of the Great War I don’t think there were many, soldiers and civilians living in Flanders, who in 1918 had the fantasy world of folk and fairy tales foremost in mind. Herein are 24 well illustrated tales from the Flanders region of Belgium illustrated by Jean De Bosschère. Also included are 12 full page colour plates plus 106 pen and ink illustrations. To make the volume even more sumptuous, each story has an individually illustrated drop capital. Some of the stories in this superb volume are: Ups And Downs The Three Monkeys How The Goldfinch Got His Colours The Cock And The Fox Sponsken And The Giant The Choristers Of St. Gudule The Magic Cap Sugar-Candy House Poor Peter The Peasant And His Ass The Reward Of The World and many more. So we invite you to download this volume, settle back with a steaming hot toddy, and be prepared to be entertained by this most enjoyable volume from yesteryear. 10% of the net profit will be donated to charities. REVIEWS from 1918: “This handsome and well-illustrated book is one of the most attractive we have seen this season. It gives us renderings of the popular fables and legends current in Flanders and Brabant which have a colour and quaintness of their own, yet combines adventures with an unobtrusive and so more effective moral.”—Saturday Review. “There are delightful stories; even more attractive than the letterpress are M. de Bosschère’s illustrations. Conceived with inexhaustible fancy, full of quaint detail, and set down with a fascinating naïveté they embody the characters and scenes of the tales with a fullness of particularism that should provide endless entertainment to youthful readers. They are the best and most complete series of designs yet produced by the artist.”—Connoisseur. “The illustrations by Jean de Bosschère are of a droll fancy. The artist has a notable power of the grotesque, and both in colour and black and white he uses it.”—Daily Telegraph.

A fairy tale like no other, for a people like no other.... An ethnic origins story for all children of European descent that instils pride and inspires imagination. History and legend, mythical and not-so-mythical creatures rub shoulders in this saga of the powers that have forged our people. Frost and fire, sea and storm, the forces that have shaped the face of the earth, become personified in beings of terrifying power: the devouring powers of chaos called giants in our myths. Grim Jack, leader of the Frost Giants, begins an Ice Age as glaciers move across North America. His goal: the annihilation of the elves, who order and shape nature into works of beauty. Boden, orphaned elf-prince of a kingdom besieged, flees across the sea to Europe, only to discover the same endless winter, and an enemy even more terrifying. But there he also meets the elf-princess Blut, whose beauty the very earth tries to imitate, and for her love he goes into battle. Together, they find help in an unlikely place: a new race of man being forged in the snowy North. Enduring unimaginable hardship, their features carved like the glaciers around them, this unique people will come to resemble the elves inside and out. With endless creative power, an indomitable will, and the mystery that lies within Blut herself, they will carve out a homeland through valor and perseverance. Possessing gifts from elves and dwarves alike, this race of explorers, inventors, and artists will set out across the seas, even to the sunset lands Boden once knew - a New World to them. But there lies an ancient evil that threatens to undo it all in one terrible act, unleashing forgetfulness and self-loathing upon an unsuspecting people. Blood. Soil. Memory. Tradition. Come join the quest with Blut and Boden.
