Excerpt from All Souls College To two kind friends I gladly confess I am under special obligations. The Warden from first to last has done everything in his power to smooth the difficulties of the annalist's task. He has allowed me to importune him in season and out of season nor have even the arduous labours of the vice-chancellorship prevented him from reading the following pages in ms. The last chapter, indeed, could never have been written had it not been for his aid. Would that the result as a whole proved more satisfactorily how much I have profited by his knowledge, criticism, and advice. Prof. Burrows not only put at my disposal his volume on The W orthies of All Souls, but most generously handed over to me all the notes he had made for a second edition. Only those who know how complete a master Prof. Burrows is of everything relating to the history of the College, can understand the value of this assistance. The writer can but hope that some of those who may turn over the pages of this little book may be led to increase their knowledge in the ampler and more sustaining air of Prof. Burrows' Magnum Opus. Yet gratitude must not be permitted to shift the burden of the written word. For any statement made, or opinion expressed, the author is alone responsible. Excerpt from Catalogue of the Archives in the Muniment Rooms of All Souls' College The documents comprised in the following Catalogue consist of the title deeds and leases of the estates belonging to All Souls' College, with letters and legal papers referring to them; charters of kings, and injunctions of archbishops, with papers and correspondence concerning the internal affairs of the College; and lastly, the accounts of the annual receipts and expenditure. The original treasury was the tower over the gateway, in which 'plate and other goodes' were kept in 'twoe chests' during the wardenship of Hovenden, and were annually examined by the warden and officers. The yearly surplus, after the payment of the College expenses, was laid up in the same place, and it appears from memoranda of evidence sent up to London for legal purposes, that the archives were also kept in the tower. They were removed in the last century to rooms which were probably built expressly to receive them, and are there stowed away in presses all made after the room was built, with the exception of a handsome oaken cabinet in the upper room, on one of the doors of which is written by the hand of Warden Hovenden, 'Confectum 1582, R. Hovenden, custode.' The rolls and books of accounts, which begin certainly in 1443, (if not earlier, as there are several rolls without dates, ) are deposited in another room by themselves. During Hovenden's wardenship, the deeds in the archives were numbered, and catalogues made of them on paper rolls. Excerpt from Worthies of All Souls: Four Centuries of English History Illustrated From the College Archives These considerations seemed to justify the attempt to lift the subject above the level of a mere dry record of events, interesting to none but antiquarians. The conception of the work was however due to an accident which, though trivial in itself, it may possibly be worth while to relate in this place. Excerpt from Jesus College The general history of the College has been gathered almost entirely from the various documents in the Muni ment Room, the most important of which are mentioned in their proper places in the text. I have also made some use of. Documents contained in the Wynne mss. In All Souls' College Library, which, however, are so voluminous and so imperfectly catalogued that quite possibly a good deal more might have been gathered from them by a more thorough examination. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The High School's Cure of Souls Nor can the over-intellectualism of the university graduate be a surprize to any one who realizes the vast transformation from the older type of American college, with its deep ethical and religious character, to the university of today with its intense specialized teaching and study on the one hand, and its absorbing athletic and social life on the other - a trans formation pictured with power and fidelity by Mr. Clarence F. Birdseye in his really great book, Individual training in our colleges. What the American high school needs is just what English Rugby needed and what the immortal Arnold gave it thru his teaching and example, and as Hughes says, above all thru his unwearied zeal in creating moral thoughtfulness in every boy with whom he came into personal contact.1 Woe unto the land if its future leaders lack moral thoughtfulness in its fullest sense: both the righteous intent and the practical wis dom; only by these two elements combined in our statesmen and citizens can the republic be saved and the nation fulfil its destiny. Excerpt from The Public Records and the Constitution: A Lecture; Delivered at All Souls College, Oxford, at the Request of the Regius Professors of Civil Law and Modern History Of the courts which have been omitted it may be said that they are or (where extinct) have been of inferior jurisdiction to those which are mentioned, and of them, as well as of the minor departments, that they do not illustrate any principle unnoticed in the plan or the lecture. The plan or table of evolution is, it is believed, the first attempt to teach constitutional history through the eye, by chart or diagram, after the manner of some of the more exact sciences. There may, it has been thought, be an advantage to teachers and students in having the story of the constitution brought within a moderate compass, and freed, at the same time, from all possibility of political bias. Excerpt from A College of Colleges The "College of Colleges" is now known throughout the world. Representatives are present, not only from all English-speaking countries, but also from Continental Europe and from Japan. This extended representation has given its distinctive character to the Summer School of 188 9. As these young men are nearly all members of the Young Men's Christian Association, the addresses this year have been more closely related than formerly, both in theme and manner of development, to the interests of the Association. This fact, together with the greater time and attention devoted to special Association work, has called for some slight changes in the arrangement from the books of former years. An entire chapter has been devoted to a history of the Students' Volunteer Movement. Two of the longest chapters present the religious crisis in Japan, and the work of the Young Men's Christian Association in that country; conditions which came to the front in the discussion of practical Christian work. Another chapter has been introduced, descriptive of the meetings themselves, which will bring before the minds of those who have been present the blessed hours which they have spent among the beautiful hills of Northfield, while it cannot fail to be of interest to others who have not enjoyed this privilege. Excerpt from A Memoir of the Right Honourable Sir William Anson: Baronet; Warden of All Souls College; Burgess for the University of Oxford It is the consequence of collecting reminiscences and estimates from different persons that there is a certain amount of repetition.
