This book is a reaction to the general neglect of cultural behavior education within civic education. It points to the particular problems, in the European context, of civic education in Slovakia. Concentration is on the main ideas of the PHARE project "Education for Citizenship and European Studies." Key ideas from the Department of Ethic and Civic Education at the Faculty of Education, Comenius University, in Bratislava (Slovakia) and ideas about new concepts for civic education and teacher training also are presented here. The humanistic ideals of Carl R. Rogers and Wolfgang Welsch's postmodern perception of culture both influence this material. Chapter 1 discusses the importance of culture, priorities of contemporary Slovak culture, and the aims of cultural education of citizens. In chapter 2, the nature of aesthetics and a non-classical version of aesthetic education are explored. Chapter 3 looks at the nature of civic education and multiculturalism in civic education. Greg Clark welcomes his readers by asking them to accompany him on a trip to a New Orleans club, where the warmth of the music and the warmth of the audience instill a special feeling of communion, of getting along. Clark s book treats the idea that jazz demands from those who make it as well as those who listen a form of life that substantiates the seemingly impossible American value that is "e pluribus unum." The process of getting along (in communication, in community) is something the great student of culture and rhetoric, Kenneth Burke, spent his life trying to describe. Clark has found that jazz, as an activity and a cultural form, goes a long way toward illustrating that process. Jazz is often described as democratic. Burke s rhetorical and aesthetic ideas explain how this is so. Working with others to address immediate problems they share can align for a time individuals who are otherwise very different. During the Roman period the construction and maintenance of civic infrastructure and monuments, such as bath buildings, theatres, fountains, arches, statues and so on were regarded as the normal duty of well-off citizens, who constituted the local government. For the subsequent period, encompassing the 4th to the 7th century AD, it has long been assumed that changing social and political conditions within the Roman Empire resulted in a severe reduction of expenditure and concurrent loss of sentimental and aesthetic attitudes towards public space. Exploring the politics of the image in the context of Israeli militarized visual culture, Civic Aesthetics examines both the omnipresence of militarism in Israeli culture and society and the way in which this omnipresence is articulated, enhanced, and contested within local contemporary visual art. Looking at a range of contemporary artworks through the lens of “civilian militarism”, Roei employs the theory of various fields, including memory studies, gender studies, landscape theory, and aesthetics, to explore the potential of visual art to communicate military excesses to its viewers.
