This book provides surgeons with insights into performing aesthetic labiaplasty. After a short introduction on the anatomy and function of the external female genitals, surgical techniques used for reducing the labia minora as well as procedures to reshape the labia majora are described in detail. With the help of high quality pictures and illustrations, readers gain information not only on the surgical procedures themselves, but also on aftercare, risks, complications and the information patients should receive before surgery. The demand for surgery to enhance the appearance and function of the external female genital area is increasing throughout the western world. However, to date no guidelines or standards have been published in a concise book format. Furthermore, this procedure is not yet included in any trainee program for specialist surgeons. As a consequence, a growing number of cases are unsuccessful, with unpleasing aesthetic and functional results. This book is a valuable source of information for plastic surgeons and also gynecologists who are interested in learning from one of the experts in this field.

An analysis of the cultural and economic drivers of the growing phenomenon of FGCS, written by cross-disciplinary experts, this book challenges the concept of individual consumer choice in FGCS: a decision that is rarely exercised in a socio-cultural vacuum. Four distinct aspects of FGCS are covered: variations in female genital anatomy; surgical techniques and evidence; historical contexts and ethical dilemmas; norm-critical understandings to inform professional responses. Rendering philosophical critiques accessible, and exposing dubious social values that underpin the practice, this text is crucial in driving a broader understanding of FGCS as a cultural phenomenon of our times. Only with a fuller understanding of the multiple perspectives of FGCS, can there be sensible alternatives for women and girls psychologically troubled by their natural, healthy form. Offering explanations and interventions at individual, institutional and societal levels, this text will be valued by both professional and non-professional audiences.

In the West, a specific ideal for female genitalia has emerged: one of absence, a "clean slit," attained through the removal of pubic hair and, increasingly, through female genital cosmetic surgery known as FGCS. In The Perfect Vagina: Cosmetic Surgery in the Twenty-First Century, Lindy McDougall provides an ethnographic account of women who choose FGCS in Australia and the physicians who perform these procedures, both in Australia and globally, while also examining the environment in which surgeons and women come together. Physicians have a vested interest in establishing this surgery as valid medical intervention, despite majority medical opinion explicitly acknowledging that a wide range of genital variation is normal. McDougall offers a nuanced picture of why and how these procedures are performed and draws parallels between FGCS and anthropological discussions of female genital circumcision (cutting). Using the neologism biomagical, she argues that cosmetic surgery functions as both ritual and sacrifice due to its promise of transformation while simultaneously submitting the body to the risks and pain of surgery, thus exposing biomedicine as an increasingly cultural and commercial pursuit. The Perfect Vagina highlights the complexities involved with FGCS, its role in Western beauty culture, and the creation and control of body image in countries where self-care is valorized and medicine is increasingly harnessed for enhancement as well as health.

Your expert introduction to genital surgery techniques This unique work describes the possibilities and limitations of modern reconstructive and aesthetic surgery of the female and male genitalia. Reconstruction of congenital and acquired abnormalities or defects – both functional and aesthetic – is a major challenge, as is individualized treatment in the case of diagnostically verified transsexualism. Surgical procedures in this highly sensitive body region require unusually detailed knowledge of the anatomy and a well-founded operative training, which goes beyond specialist training. Written by a panel of European experts in genital surgery, the work successfully links the fields of plastic surgery, gynecology, urology, and dermatology. Key Features: The specialized surgical techniques can be quickly reviewed and understood by means of concise texts and more than 300 illustrations Complications and complication management are directly integrated into the chapters and facilitate a realistic assessment of the risks while suggesting appropriate therapy of the complications themselves Numerous case studies illustrate the many facets of the subject using many highquality color photographs and graphics Special chapter on genital surgery in the pediatric population, including ectopic testes, phimosis, hypospadias, vaginal malformations, rectovaginal fistulas, and more. Reconstructive and Aesthetic Genital Surgery will be a much-welcomed guide for the surgeon becoming acquainted with the complexities and controversies of genital surgery.
