Excerpt from Adventures in the South Seas Many of those who oppose the work of evangelizing hea then races assert that a people found in heathenism are better left as they happen to be when discovered. This amazing allegation has sometimes been made even in relation to the wild tribes of the South Seas. T 0 take such a position is to acknowledge that for these island peoples unrestrained murder is better than the enjoyment of life under conditions of peace and safety; that unrelieved misery is better than joy and happiness, secured to them by an ordered govern ment; that enslaving fear is better than the confiding trust that now marks their intertribal and interisland relationships; that the intrenched superstitions of idol and demon worship are better than the comforts and blessings of the Christian faith; that their former loathsome depravity is better than the comparative refinement and elevation of their present condition; that brutalized immorality is better than gospel morality; and that their former terribly dwarfed mentality is better than their present enlightenment and remarkable mental development. These assertions seldom come from those who are not actively opposed to the application of gospel principles in these islands. The mental awakening which invariably fol iows the renouncement of heathenism and the acceptance of the gospel by these native races, is neither wanted nor encouraged by those who maintain such an attitude. Such persons are opposed to the assertion of gospel power any where. Therefore, they are opposed to its asserting itself in the South Sea Islands. Their purpose is selfish. Their attitude is preposterous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Affair in the South Seas: A Story of Romantic Adventure When you read of old Captain Swanson, and Hadley, and Doctor Saville, please remember that none of their imperfections are charged to you, since you have never seen a line of the story. Your kind words, however, have encouraged me to carry this little romance to a conclusion, and, whether you shall like it, or whether it shall offend you, please look upon it as a modest token of friendship. Excerpt from Through the South Seas With Jack London Accounts Of dare-devil exploits have always been read with deep interest. One Of the salient features of human nature is curiosity, a desire to know what is being said and done outside the narrow limits Of one's individual experience, or, in other words, to learn the modes Of life Of persons whose environment and problems are different from one's own environment and problems. TO this natural curiosity, the book of travel is particularly gratifying. But when we add to the fact that such a narrative treats of races and conditions almost unknown to the inhabitants Of civilised countries the consideration that those voyageurs to whom the adventures fell are men and women already prominently before the public, and so deserving of that public's special confidence, the interest and value of such a work will be seen to be extraordinarily enhanced. Excerpt from White Shadows in the South Seas It is not given to every man to start on the quest of the rainbow's end. Such fantastic pursuit is not for him who is bound by ties of home and duty and fortune to-make. He has other adventure at his own door, sterner fights to wage, and, perhaps, higher rewards to gain. Still, the ledgers close sometimes on a sigh, and by the cosiest fireside one will see in the coals pictures that have nothing to do with wedding rings or balances at the bank. Excerpt from Sea-Life Sixty Years Ago: A Record of Adventures Which Led Up to the Discovery of the Relics of the Long-Missing Expedition Commanded by the Comte De La Perouse Of late years, the memory of many men who distinguished themselves in various ways during their lives has been revived on the centenary of their birth or death. Just a hundred years have now elapsed since the departure of the most celebrated of French navigators on a voyage of discovery in the South Seas, from which he never returned. In the follow ing pages will be found a record of the remarkable chain of adventures (with the latter part of which the writer was personally associated) that ultimately led to a thorough clearing up of the mystery which had so long shrouded the fate of this French expedi tion commanded by the Comte de la Perouse.
