This book is a collation of numerous valuable guidelines for making decisions based on recent advances and improvement of transport systems. Offering know-how and discussing practical examples as well as decision-making support systems it is of interest of those who face the challenge of seeking solutions to contemporary transport system problems on a daily basis, including local authorities involved in planning and preparation of development strategies for specific transport related areas (in both urban and regional dimension) as well as representatives of business and industry who participate directly in the implementation of traffic engineering solutions. The guidelines are provided in individual chapters, making it possible to address the given problem in an advanced manner and simplify the choice of appropriate strategies (including those related to increasing competitiveness of public transport; identifying bus lines to potentially be serviced by electric buses; pedestrian traffic solutions; developing bike-sharing systems; safety conditions in road tunnels; integrating supply chains or route planning support by means of technologically advanced systems and applications). On the other hand, since the book also addresses the new approach to theoretical models (including traffic flow surveys and measurements, transport behaviours, capacity models, delay modelling and road condition modelling), it appeals to researchers and scientists studying this body of problems. The book entitled Recent Advances in Traffic Engineering for Transport Networks and Systems includes selected papers submitted to and presented at the 14th Scientific and Technical Conference “Transport Systems. Theory and Practice” organised by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology. The conference was held on 18–20 September 2017 in Katowice (Poland).

The increasingly important role of Internet-based, “cloud” service delivery is motivating the evolution of the Internet to a flatter hierarchy of more densely interconnecting networks that shall cost-effectively scale to Zettabytes of bandwidth with improved operational efficiency, under increased traffic variability, and forecast unpredictability. This chapter reviews the implications of this evolution in its underlying metro regional and core transport network architectures, and evaluates the most important innovations in photonics, optical transport, routing, and traffic engineering technologies enabling it. Most notably, 1) a new generation of coherent DWDM systems with more than 2 b/s/Hz spectral efficiency is scaling the existing fiber infrastructure, albeit at a significantly higher proportion, typically more than 50%, of the total transport network cost, while 2) the convergence of IP/MPLS with flexible DWDM promises the most cost-efficient transport evolution, in open architectures that combine advancements in photonics, routing, multi-layer control-plane and management coordination, with interoperability, to improve operation, automate provisioning and restoration, and may optimize network utilization.

This book focuses on emerging technologies in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) namely efficient information dissemination between vehicles, infrastructures, pedestrians and public transportation systems. It covers the state-of-the-art of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), with centralized and decentralized (Peer-to-Peer) communication architectures, considering several application scenarios. With a detailed treatment of emerging communication paradigms, including cross networking and distributed algorithms. Unlike most of the existing books, this book presents a multi-layer overview of information dissemination systems, from lower layers (MAC) to high layers (applications). All those aspects are investigated considering the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones/tablets and embedded systems, i.e. technologies that during last years completely changed the current market, the user expectations, and communication networks. The presented networking paradigms are supported and validated by means of extensive simulative analysis and real field deployments in different application scenarios. This book represents a reference for professional technologist, postgraduates and researchers in the area of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), wireless communication and distributed systems.

Intelligent traffic and transport systems combine the skills and management technologies of engineering, artificial intelligence, information technology and telecommunications to improve the efficiency of traffic and transport, benefitting the environment by reducing air and noise pollution and helping to create traffic free zones in cities. The management of public transport systems and vehicle fleets can also be improved by the provision of on-line information and better communication. This book presents the proceedings of ICITT2022, the 6th International Conference on Intelligent Traffic and Transportation, held in Paris, France from 25 – 27 September 2022. ICITT is a major annual event for the academics, researchers and industrialists engaged in intelligent traffic and transportation research, and is a friendly and inclusive platform that brings together a broad community of researchers sharing the common goal of developing and managing the engineering and technology key to sustaining the success of the intelligent traffic and transportation industries. The theme of the 2022 conference was Smart Digital Traffic and Transportation, and the book includes 15 papers, selected after a rigorous peer-review process. The papers are divided into 4 sections, which cover intelligent traffic and transportation; transportation in future smart cities; mobility and cyber-physical systems; and intelligent automation and ICT-enabled collaborative global systems. Covering a wide range of topics, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of intelligent traffic and transportation.

This book explores the application of breakthrough technologies to improve transportation performance. Transportation systems represent the “blood vessels” of a society, in which people and goods travel. They also influence people’s lives and affect the liveability and sustainability of our cities. The book shows how emergent technologies are able to monitor the condition of the structure in real time in order to schedule the right moment for maintenance activities an so reduce the disturbance to users. This book is a valuable resource for those involved in research and development in this field. Part I discusses the context of transportation systems, highlighting the major issues and challenges, the importance of understating human factors that could affect the maintenance operations and the main goals in terms of safety standards. Part II focuses on process-oriented innovations in transportation systems; this section stresses the importance of including design parameters in the planning, offering a comparison between risk-based and condition-based maintenance and, lastly, showing applications of emergent technologies. Part III goes on to reflect on the technical-oriented innovations, discussing the importance of studying the physical phenomena that are behind transportation system failures and problems. It then introduces the general trend of collecting and analyzing big data using real-world cases to evaluate the positive and negative aspects of adopting extensive smart sensors for gathering information on the health of the assets. The last part (IV) explores cultural and behavioural changes, and new knowledge management methods, proposing novel forms of maintenance and vocational training, and introduces the need for radical new visions in transportation for managing unexpected events. The continuous evolution of maintenance fields suggests that this compendium of “state-of-the-art” applications will not be the only one; the authors are planning a collection of cutting-edge examples of transportation systems that can assist researchers and practitioners as well as students in the process of understanding the complex and multidisciplinary environment of maintenance engineering applied to the transport sector.
