Excerpt from A Treatise on Diphtheria The cases of diphtheria in every physician's practice are so numerous that, with very few exceptions, I shall abstain from detailing histories. What I hope to present in this little book is a condensed but tolerably extensive report on the present state of what is known about diphtheria. Excerpt from On Diphtheria The following treatise is founded partly upon the study of diphtheria in public and private practice, partly upon information obtained in the course of an inquiry into the causes, symptoms, and treatment of the disease, made for the Privy Council, in the spring of 1859. In the progress of this investigation I visited several districts in which diphtheria then prevailed, both for the purpose of observing the disease and also of ascertaining the result of the experience of those provincial practitioners who had been most extensively engaged in its treatment. From these gentlemen I received the most efficient aid in the prosecution of my inquiry, and I gladly take this opportunity to express my sense of their kindness, and of the great value of the information with which they supplied me. Excerpt from A Treatise on Diphtheria: Its History, Etiology, Varieties, Pathology, Sequelae, Diagnosis, and Homoeopathic Therapeutics Diphtheria has been in every part of the world. It has prevailed in every country in Europe, from the semi-tropical climate of Southern Spain to the Baltic Provinces of Russia, and at every season so that in Italy it has been supposed that the progress of the disease was favored by the heat of summer, and in the north of Europe, the winter has been considered the chosen sea son for its ravages. Excerpt from Diphtheria: Its Causes, Prevention, and Proper Treatment In writing upon the treatment of diphtheria, the author has described the methods which he employs in his own practice, and which he has found successful in a large number of cases, some of which were of the worst form. These methods are not presented as original. They have been selected from those described in the numerous articles on the subject, written by those of the most extensive experience. The author is especially indebted to the very exhaustive treatise on the subject of diphtheria in Ziemssen's Cyclopaedia of Medicine. Excerpt from Experimental Diphtheria Having lost many a battle with this disease so terribly destructive to infants, I have frequently asked myself if the received opinions upon which our present treatment is based are correct, and here I encountered grave doubts. I was at last moved to make the attempt of looking deeper into the nature of diphtheria. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Diphtheria and Its Associates The subject of Diphtheria has been one of deep interest to me since the days of my pupilage, and has occupied active attention in each of the four editions of my systematic work on Diseases of the Throat as they have appeared at intervals since 1878. The present essay is based mainly on a course of lectures recently delivered, for the purpose of establishing a landmark at an important era in the history of diphtheria, and of emphasising the desirability of assimilating the teachings of bacteriology to the purposes of practical medicine. In other words, to indicate the necessity for the scientific expert and the clinician to work together as colleagues, and not as rivals. Excerpt from Diphtheria, as It Prevailed in the United States From 1860 to 1866: Preceded by an Historical Account of Its Phenomena, Its Nature, and Homoeopathic Treatment I then determined to make myself, as far as possible, familiar with the nature of Diphtheria, by examining its records from the most ancient times. For this purpose I procured-from the Library of the Pennsylvania Hospital all the works relating to the subject. Excerpt from Diphtheria, Its Symptoms and Treatment The Lectures are dogmatical in tone, be cause they were addressed to students; and I believe dogmatism to be essenn'al for success fld student-teaching. I endeavoured to mks them practical in regard of diagnosis and treat ment, because they were delivered to a clinical class. The of the cases are few, partly because the majority of the patients were seen in private, and partly because I have found that students are more confused than instructed.
