Excerpt from A Text-Book of Comparative Physiology for Students and Practitioners of Comparative (Veterinary) Medicine Some years of contact with students of comparative (commonly called veterinary) medicine, and a fair knowledge of the actual needs of the practitioner of this department of the medical art, have convinced me that the time has fully come when the text-books of physiology provided for students of human medicine, and which the former classes have hitherto been compelled to use, should be replaced by works written to meet their special wants and possibilities. In fact, so different from man are most of the animals which the veterinarian is called upon to treat, and therefore to understand, in health as well as in disease, that only the absence of suitable works of a special character can justify the use of those that confessedly treat of man alone. Unfortunately, till within the past year the English-speaking student of comparative medicine has been without a single work in his own language of the special character required. Within that period two have appeared - the excellent but ponderous Physiology of the Domestic Animals, by Prof. Smith, and my own Text-Book of Animal Physiology. It has, therefore, occurred to me that a somewhat smaller work than the latter, embodying the same plan, but with greater specialization for the domestic animals, would commend itself to both the students and the practitioners of comparative medicine. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Comparative Physiology for Students and Practitioners of Comparative (Veterinary) Medicine Most teachers of experience will welcome the summary with which each chapter concludes. In connection with no subject perhaps can the art of generalizing be better taught than with physiology, and to this end these brief synoptical sections will, it is thought, prove helpful. When considering the physiological systems of the body, the degree of species variation within the reproductive system compared to other systems is remarkable. Furthermore, it is essential that researchers, educators, and students alike remain aware of the fundamental comparative differences in the reproductive biology of domestic species. Written by renowned scientists in their respective fields, Comparative Reproductive Biology is a comprehensive reference on the reproductive systems of domestic species. The book offers both broad and specific knowledge in areas that have advanced the field in recent years, including advances in cell and molecular biology applied to reproduction, transgenic animal production, gender selection, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, cryobiology, animal cloning and many others. This seminal text includes topics in animal reproduction that are usually only found as part of other books in animal science such as anatomy, histology, physiology, radiology, ultrasonogrophy, and others. Comprehensive reference of the reproductive systems of domestic species Written by a team of top researchers Richly illustrated throughout, including 12 pages of color images
