"Readers have been aware of Raymond Carver's preoccupation with voyeurism and the visual for decades. Ayala Amir expands our knowledge of these issues by examining the links between the visual in fiction and related fields such as photography and cinema, opening up a whole new, interdisciplinary dimension to Carver's work. The Visual Poetics of Raymond Carver is a very welcome contribution to our understanding of Carver's stories."-Sandra Lee Kleppe, International Raymond Carver Society --

These seven stories were the last that Carver wrote. Among them is one of his longest, 'Errand', in which he imagines the death of Chekhov, a writer Carver hugely admired and to whose work his own was often compared. This fine story suggests that the greatest of modern short-story writers may, in the year before his untimely death, have been flexing his muscles for a longer work.

"Raymond Carver, known in some circles as the "godfather of minimalism," has been credited by many as the rejuvenator of the once-dying American short story. Drawing on representative tales from each of Carver's major volumes of fiction, Nesset's critical exploration leads us deep into the heart of Carver country, an eerie post-industrial world of low-rent survivors." "In this comprehensive study of Carver, Nesset discusses the relationship of minimalism and postmodern trends and the rise of new realism. By locating Carver in the gallery of American letters, Nesset shows him to be at once more simple and more complex than we might have believed, skillfully laying the groundwork for Carver studies to come."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Short Story after Apartheid offers the first major study of the anglophone short story in South Africa since apartheid’s end. By focusing on the short story this book complicates models of South African literature dominated by the novel and contributes to a much-needed generic and formalist turn in postcolonial studies. Literary texts are sites of productive struggle between formal and extra-formal concerns, and these brief, fragmentary, elliptical, formally innovative stories offer perspectives that reframe or revise important concerns of post-apartheid literature: the aesthetics of engaged writing, the politics of the past, class and race, the legacies of violence, and the struggle over the land. Through an analysis of key texts from the period by Nadine Gordimer, Ivan Vladislavić, Zoë Wicomb, Phaswane Mpe, and Henrietta Rose-Innes, this book assesses the place of the short story in post-apartheid writing and develops a fuller model of how artworks allow and disallow forms of social thought.
