The questions proposed repeatedly referred to our missions. Moreover, I have noticed during the lengthy period of my life beyond the frontiers of Russia, that the substance of these questions has gradually taken a different form. At first, I used to be asked: ' Of course you have not yet any missions, any more than you had in former times? ' Then: ' Is it true that you have established some sort of mission in Japan?' Further on: £ It seems that you have missions of some sort in Siberia? ' Still further : ' Could you not give us some precise statistics as to the number of conversions in your missions ? ' And finally : ' What is your opinion--would it not be better for us to close our mission in Japan, in order not to hinder the regular growth of your mission, especially as our Church aims at reunion with yours V It is evident how the questions gradually took a different form in accordance with the spread of information concerning the working of our missions appearing in the pages of the periodical press. The contents of my little work hardly require any explanation. At one time the enemies of Orthodoxy gave currency to the assertion that the Orthodox Eastern Church never had and has not now any missions, that she is in a state of stagnation and backwardness, and is therefore on the brink of destruction. The reader can judge for himself how far these assertions are just.Eugenii Konstantinovich Konstantinovich

Excerpt from The Russian Orthodox Church: Organization, Situation, Activity The position of religion in the Soviet state is defined by the decree of the Soviet Government of January 23, 1918, on freedom of conscience and on the separation of the Church from State and of the school from the Church. This decree says that the Church is separated from the State and that within the frontiers of the Republic She is forbidden to issue any laws or regulations which could restrict or limit freedom of conscience, or establish privileges or advantages of any sort based on the religious affiliation of the citizen. In accordance with this decree, every citizen of the State may practise any religion or none. All deprivations of rights connected with the practice or non-practice of any faith are abolished. All data about the religious affilia tion or non-affiliation of the citizen have been struck out of all official docu ments. All the activities of state and other public or legal institutions are performed without any religious rites or ceremonies. Freedom of performing religious rites is guaranteed in so far as they do not involve a disturbance of public order and do not prejudice the rights of Soviet citizens. Local authorities have the right to apply all necessary meas ures to maintain public order and security in such cases. No one can refuse to fulfil his civic duties on religious grounds. Exemption from this by the substitution of one civic duty for another is permissible in individual cases by decision of the people's court. Rarely are we privileged to see the making of a saint, but it is just what this book gives us for John of Kronstadt (1829&–1908), a major figure in the religious life of Late Imperial Russia. So popular was Father John during his years of ministry that Kronstadt became a pilgrimage site replete with peddlers selling souvenir photographs, postcards, and commemorative mugs. A Prodigal Saint follows Father John&’s development from activist priest to venerated spiritual leader and, after his death, to his elevation to sainthood in 1990. We see both the inner life of an aspiring saint and the symbiotic relationship between a living icon and his followers. Father John represented a fundamentally new type of religious behavior and a new standard of sanctity in Late Imperial Russia. He ministered to the poor of Kronstadt, creating shelters and employment programs and participating in the temperance movement. In the process he acquired a reputation for prayerful intercession that soon spread beyond Kronstadt. When he was asked to minister to the dying Alexander III in 1894, his fame became international as he attracted correspondents from the United States and Europe. In his later years he allied himself increasingly with the radical right, which has had momentous implications for the Russian Orthodox Church in the twentieth century. Kizenko draws upon rich and virtually unknown documents from the Russian archives, including Father John&’s diaries, thousands of letters he received from his followers, and the police reports on the sect that formed around him. John&’s diaries are a truly unique source, for they document the making of a modern saint: his struggles with doubt, his ascetic practices, and his growing realization that others saw him as a saint. Kizenko explores the extent to which Father John collaborated in the formation of his own cult and how he himself was influenced by the expectations and desires of his audience. In the final chapter she follows Father John&’s posthumous reputation (and the struggles over how to use that reputation) in Russia, the Soviet Union, and throughout the world. A Prodigal Saint is published in collaboration with the Harriman Institute at Columbia University as part of its Studies of the Harriman Institute series. It is a pioneering study that contributes to our understanding of lived religion, saints&’ cults, and modern Russian history.

Excerpt from Historical Outline of the Russian Orthodox Church in North America and in Particular of the Parish of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in the City of Toronto At that time Bishop John had under his jurisdiction, besides Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and California, also a parish in New York which was founded in 1870 and whose first pastor was Father Nicholas Bierring, a native of Denmark and formerly professor of philosophy and history of the Roman Catholic Seminary in Baltimore, who Joined the Rus sian Orthodox Church because of his disagreement with the dogma of the infallibility of the Pope. In this church in New York the liturgy was performed, in turn, in Church Slavonic and in English, and the English services attracted a growing attendance of Americans.
