Any municipal body, as a shade tree commission, or the managers of a public institution, will be aided without charge; individuals will ordinarily be re quired to pay the consultant's expenses, but not his salary. Because of the comparatively short life of some species of trees used and because of hard conditions under which shade trees often grow, we are now in a period in which the shade trees planted or left standing by early Illinois settlers are rapidly deteriorating and are dying in large numbers.
