The period from 1840 to 1870 was a period of great changes in the human history of Alberta and among the Native people, with the transition from the traditional hunting/ trapping/fur trade lifestyle to a Frontier Settlement culture. 1840-1860 saw both a continuing invasion of foreign aliens into the west, and the growth of the Indian culture into the Classical Plains Indian culture. Both influences were at work among the First Nations of central Alberta. On the one hand there was the growing classical Plains Indian lifestyle and regalia, and on the other hand a growing Frontier Settlement subsistence farming and increasing literacy and an expansion of the Cree culture to fill all the economic and commercial niches offered by a frontier society. 690 pages.

The 1860's were both the apogee of the Plains Indian culture in the west, and the move towards the political and economic growth of the west as a successful Native State. At the same time, it marked a crisis period and the beginning of the end of the west and the First Nations as an independent sovreign people prior to the hostile annexation of the west by Canada.

He is not mentioned in the popular or academic history of the Canadian west or in the Indian history of the west. In fact, western development owes a large debt to Chief PESEW - Louis Joseph Piche. Coming west as a young Voyageur with Peter Pond, Piche eventually rose to become the Head Chief of the Cree/Nakoda alliance in the west, and their allied tribes. His sway reached from Winnipeg to the Pacific, and from Lesser Slave Lake to Wyoming. It is Piche and his followers who "settled" the west, and it is thanks to him that the west was settled peacefully for those who followed. Piche had a large family, and most of the Western Cree chiefs today can trace descent to him. 468 pages.

Examining fifteen case studies from New York to Vancouver, Atlanta to Chicago, Montreal to Phoenix, The Life of North American Suburbs traces the insightful connection between the evolution of suburbs and the cultural dynamics of modern society. Suburbs are uniquely significant spaces: their creation and evolution reflect the shifting demographics, race relations, modes of production, cultural fabric, and class structures of society at large. The case studies investigate the place of suburbs within their wider metropolitan constellations: the crucial role they play in the cultural, economic, political, and spatial organization of the city. Together, the chapters paint a compelling portrait of North American cities and their dynamic suburban landscapes.

Frazer has prepared a systematic listing of all presidios and military forts, which were ever, at any time and in any sense, so designated. The lists of posts are arranged alphabetically within the boundaries of present states. Pertinent information is included for each fort: date of establishment, location, and reason for establishment; name, rank, and military unit of the person establishing the post; origin of the post name and changes in name and location; present status or date of abandonment; and disposition of any existing military reservation. A map for each state shows the location of the posts discussed. A prime reference for historians, Forts of the West will prove useful to readers of western history as well.
