Excerpt from A Report on National Planning and Public Works in Relation to Natural Resources and Including Land Use and Water Resources: With Findings and Recommendations; December 1, 1934 The land surface of the continental United States is in round figures million acres. Nearly all of it is capable of some kind of use, although relatively small parts are not now employed and large areas are inadequately or wastefully used. The accompanying figure shows the present major uses of our land surface and also summarizes the uses 25 years from now as estimated in terms of requirements for various uses in relation to available land resources. Meeting our requirements for agricultural products is a primary consideration. These requirements will be determined largely by prospective population, stand ards of consumption, foreign trade, and probable changes in yields and carrying capacity.
