Past time is by some divided Into three parts, thus decided: The imperfect speaks of something that was doing: The maid was baking, the man and boy were brewing.. To this too you the name may give Of past: or, past progressive. The past emphatic doth with emphasis declare: The girls did dance: the boys did laugh: the men did stare. The simple past doth merely state the fact: We sang: they danced and laughed: a simple act. LESSON XLVI. THE PERFECT TENSE. The perfect tense speaks of an act completed and done: As, The boys all went to the fair and enjoyed the fuu; Or, of an act junt done; and complete in itself: Perfect complete: I have left my book on the shelf; Or, of an act not altogether complete: As, I have been walking through the street. With the simple perfect, the perfect complete, And the perfect progressive, thus we meet. THE PLUPERFECT TENSE. The pluperfect speaks of an act already done and past: As, I had danced three times before I danced the last; Or, I had been dancing when my sister stood aghast. THE FUTURE TENSB. The future tense speaks of that which is to be: As, Within a week we all shall go to sea. Two future tenses are generally reckoned: Incomplete the first, complete the second. Excerpt from An English Grammar for the Use of Junior Classes This Grammar is designed, as its title indicates, for the use of Junior Classes in the Schools throughout the Province. The same definitions have been given in it as in the larger a ad more advanced Grammar, authorized by the Council of Public Instruction; and, where the mode of expression has been altered, the change has been made with a view to rendering the subject more easily understood by the class of pupils for whom it specially intended. It may, therefore, be considered as an introductory Grammar to the Analytical and Practical Grammar, and not by any means as intended to supersede it. Keeping in view the fact that it is intended rather for beginners in the study of Grammar, than for those more advanced, the Editor has embraced in the Questions every point referred to both in the body of the work and also in the appended remarks. Under the guidance of a judicious teacher these Questions may be made useful to the pupil, by enabling him to test himself, by way of question and answer, on the lesson which may have been assigned to him for preparation. The teacher, however, should carefully avoid, as a general rule, asking the questions in the identical form in which they are found in the Grammar. They are given with a view to aid the pupil rather than the teacher. It cannot be expected that in such a Grammar all the examples of difference in Gender, Number, &c., should be given. Much is necessarily left to be supplemented by the Teacher. The subject of Analysis has, it is hoped, not received too prominent consideration, for it performs a very important part in enabling pupils to read correctly and intelligently.
