Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 8 of 15 Heath (Benjamin), a lawyer of eminence, and town-clerk of Exeter, was a celebrated scholar and an author. He wrote, 1. "An Essay towards a demonstrative Proof of the Divine Existence, Unity, and Attributes; to which is premised, a short Defence of the Argument commonly called, a priori, 1740." This pamphlet was dedicated to Dr. Oliver of Bath, and is to be ranked amongst the ablest defences of Dr. Clarke's, or rather Mr. Howe's, hypothesis; for it appears to be taken from Howe's "Living Temple." 2. "The Cafe of the County of Devon with respect to the Consequences of the new Excise Duty on Cyder and Perry. Published by the direction of the Committee appointed at a General Meeting of that County to superintend the Application for the Repeal of that Duty, 1763," 4to. To this representation of the Circumstances peculiar to Devonshire, the repeal of the act is greatly to be ascribed. The piece indeed was considered as so well-timed a service to the public, that Mr. Heath received some honourable notice on account of it at a general meeting of the county. 3. "Notae five Lectiones ad Tragicorum Graecorum veterum, aeschyli, &c. 1752," 4to; a work which places the author's learning and critical skill in a very conspicuous light: a principal object of which was to restore the metre of the Grecian tragic poets. It is highly valued by all found critics of our own and foreign countries. The fame solidity of judgement apparent in the preceding, distinguished the author's last production; 4. "A Revisal of Shakspeare's d104, wherein the alterations introduced into it by the more modern editors and critics are particularly considered, 1765," 8vo. It appears from the lift of Oxford graduates, that Mr. Benjamin Heath was created D. C. L. by diploma, March 31, 1762. He was educated in the court of Ferdinand and Ifabella, and entered very early into the military profeflion. He was addieted to all the excefles too common in that line of life, but was at the fame time a good officer, and one who fought occafions to diftin guifh himfelf. His valour was confpicuous at Pampeluna, in 1521, when it was befieged by the French, and there he had his leg broken by a cannon-(hot. During the confinement occafioned by this wound, he formed a refolution of renouncing the world, of travelling to Jerufalem, and dedicating his life to the fervice of God. He is (aid to have imbibed his ardpur of zeal by read ing the legends of the faints; though fome have denied that he knew the ufe of letters. But whether he read, or had there things read to him, he certainly conceived an ardour of reli gions aetivity, which has not often been equalled. He had no fooner received his cure than he went to hang up his arms over the altar of the blefied Virgin at Montferrat, to Whom he devoted his fervices on March 24, I 522: for he carried the laws of chivalry to his religious Obfervances. In his way, he difputed with a Moor on the perpetual virginity of the bleffed Virgin, in whofe caufe he was in great danger of defiroyinf; his opponent. Having watched all night at Montferrat, fometimes fianding, and fometimes kneeling, and having devoted himfelf mof't earneflly to her, he fet out before day-break, in a pilgrim's habit to Manrefa. He really per fuaded himfelf, as it is related of him, that the king of France would never make peace with England, unlefs the author of Liberty aflerted was delivered up to him and Upon this full perfuafion of his own imnortance, is (aid to have waited on his patron, the duke of Marlborough, when the congrefs was held at Utrecht for'a treaty of peace, to delire that no fnch article might be flipulated, as his being given up. The duke told him, that he was forry he could not ferve him, for he really had no interefk with any of the miniflers of that time; but (aid, that he fancied his cafe was not fo defperate as he imagined that he had indeed made no fuch provifion for himfel'f, yet tould not help thinking, that he had done the French almoft as much damage as even Mr. Dennis himfelf. Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 15 of 15: Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Lives and Writings of the Most Eminent Persons in Every Nation Tollius (Jacobus), a physician and very learned man, was a native of Ingra, in the territory of Utrecht; and taught the belles lettres in his own country with great reputation and profit for some time. In 1684, the marquis of Brandenburg appointed him professor of eloquence and the Greek tongue. He made several journeys into different parts of Germany, into Hungary, and Italy; of which he has given some account in a posthumous work, published under the title of "Epistolae itinerariae," by Henninius, at Amsderdam, 1700, in 4to. It is said there are some useful and curious things on these epistles. Tollius was an editor of two antient authors, of "Asonius, cum notis variorum, 1671," 8vo; and of "Langinus, 1694," 4to, with a Latin version in the same page, and Boileau's French version in the opposite. He was a critic of more learning than judgement, as the title of the following work may shew: "Fortuita sacra, in quibus praeter critica nonnulla tota fabularis historia Graeca, Ph nicia, AEgyptiaca, ad chymian pertinere asseritur, 1687," in 8vo. He pushedthis extravagant notion so far as to seek for the secrets of chymistry and the philosopher's stone in the fables of Paganism. This does not shew a very sound judgement; yet there is a great deal of learning, and some curious things, in his book. He died in 1696. He had brother, named Cornelius Tollius, who was also a very learned man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 22: Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Lives and Writings of the Most Eminent Persons in Every Nation The services of Lorenzo to the fine arts were not less con spicuous than those which be rendered to letters, by augment ing his father's collection of the remains of antient taste and skill. It is not, however, on this account Only that he is entitled to the esteem of the professors and admirers of the arts. He determined to excite, among his Countrymen, a good taste, and, by proposing to their imitation the te mains of the ancient masters, to elevate their views beyond the forms of common life, to this contemplation of that ideal beauty which alone distinguishes works of art from mere mechanical productions. With this view he appro priated his gardens in Florence to the establishment of an academy for the study of the antique, which be furnished with a profusion of statues, busts, and other relies of art. Excerpt from A General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 3 Newton (john) an episcopal clergy man of Calvinistic principles, born in London in 1795. He did not enjoy the advantages of a regular education, having, in the early part of his life, been taken to sea by his father, who was master of a merchant-ship. Becoming commander of a vessel employed in the slave trade, he made several voyages to the coast of Africa, for the purpose of carrying on that dis gusting trafl'ic, and in the mean time contracted habits of dissipation and vice, which the bru talizing scenes he witnessed tended to origi nate and confirm. At length he grew serious and fond of study, and having relinquished the occupation of a mariner, he, in 1755, obtained the office of tide-surveyor of the port'of Liver pool. There he remained several years, and during the latter part of that period he be came a preacher, and made some abortive at tempts to gain a settlement as pastor to a dis senting congregation. In 1764 he was ordained a clergyman of the church of England, by the bishop of Lincoln, and immediately after, through the intervention of lord Dartmouth, he was appointed curate of Olney in Bucking hamshire. During a residence of fifteen years at that place, he formed an intimate friendship with the poet Cowper, whence originated a vo lume of hymns for public worship, their joint composition. In 1779 Mr Newton removed to London, on being promoted to the rectory of St Mary Woolnoth, which he held till his death in December 1007. He was the author of a Review of Ecclesiastical History, 1770, 8vo Messiah, or a Series of Discourses on the Scriptural Passages which form the Ora torio of Handel, 1786, 2 vols. 8vo and other works, which have been printed toge ther, in 6 vols. 8vo and 12 vols. 12mm Evang.
