Excerpt from 1797-1897 Centennial Celebration of the United Presbyterian (the Old White) Church Building, Salem, Washington County, November 9th, 1897 A score and a half years ago, when the centenary was observed of the settlement in Salem by the congregation from Ballibay, it was strongly urged by many that the proceedings should be published. Preliminaries were arranged, but the plan never came to fruition. Dr. Asa Fitch's valuable and painstaking address was preserved, but only in manuscript, as also were papers full of interesting memories by several aged ministers, poems inspired by the event, speeches congratulatory, reminiscent, forecasting. These have since been collected, and occupy a secure, not obscure, corner in the Public Library. Moreover, although not printed in compact form, they have served as treasuries from which data have been obtained when other mile-stones in the pilgrimage have been reached. The next observable point whence a look back was taken, to inspire a forward march, was the year 1876. Then the clergyman in charge compiled a history, which covers the space from the coming of Dr. Thomas Clark, bringing over the congregation to this country, until the fifth year of the author's pastorate. These five years multiplied into five times five. The quarter-centennial was marked by the retention again of facts worth remembering, which assumed the shape of "The Anniversary Souvenir." Excerpt from The One-Hundredth Anniversary of the Organization of the First Presbyterian Church, Springfield, Illinois: Sunday, January Twenty-Ninth to Sunday, February Fifth, 1928 This booklet is the product of no one, but rather of a Century of time and an organization of people. Without a splendid tradition, a loyal, and earnest congregation it could never have been written. Indeed, the best of the Centennial Celebration can never be committed to writing. It was rather seen and felt. Not only the church but the city responded to the occasion. The program as outlined elsewhere was car ried through without a hitch. The church was thronged with people not only for the announced public events, but at all hours for the week. Each speaker made a distinct contribution and each event was complete and inspiring. There was no single occurence to mar what was surely a great celebration. But we missed many who could not return. Some had joined the Church Triumphant, and we felt their interest and presence. Others we thought of and heard from; that was no small part of the pleasure of the week. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
