Excerpt from A Manual of the Antiquity of Man N 0 subject, of late years, has so much engrossed the atten tion of geologists as the antiquity of the human race. The interest was greatly increased by the publication of Sir Charles Lyell's Antiquity of Man. This work called the attention of the public to the subject, and so great became the interest that many volumes and memoirs have been added to the list, discussing the question in various ways, and, for the most part, in, such a manner as to add fresh interest and throw more light on the subject. The scientific men were slow to take advantage of the discoveries continually being made of the bones and works of man found in caves and associated with the remains of extinct animals. It is probable, even at this late day, there would not have been so much discussion of this subject had not Sir Charles Lyell lent the weight of his great name to it. Educated men, everywhere, began to doubt the correctness of Archbishop Usher's chronology, and so complete has been the revolution of opinion that it is almost impossible to find an intelligent man who would limit the period of man's existence to years. Excerpt from The Antiquity of Man In accumulating the material and facts on which this book is based the author has become deeply indebted to many men. The help of some he has acknowledged in the text, but there are many whose names do not appear there. The omission does not mean that he is not grateful to them for their help. He must, however, acknowledge here the assistance he has received from time to time from the officers of the British Museum, from Mr J. Reid Moir, Mr A. S. Kennard, Mr W. H. Cook, the Rev. Edwin H. Mullins, and Mr Courtney Lyne. For assistance in preparing illustrations for this work he is indebted to his friend, Dr Stanley Beale, and particularly to Mr William Finerty. Excerpt from Origin and Antiquity of Man There are two classes of writers who produce two very distinct classes of books. The first are trained to write, as the gladiators were trained to fight, and are the present champions of the prize-ring. Libraries and encyclopaedias are their weapons. The skilful use of these is their strength. They learn to polish periods, and write over other men's ideas, and by burnishing and varnishing, and a slight veneer of wording, present them so different that their authors do not recognize their own children. They do not write because they have any thing to say, but because there is honor and profit in the pen. The second class write because they have something to say. Libraries are of little benefit to them, and because of their originality, they are not encouraged by profit. I claim no skill in modelling sentences, or in the desirable art of presenting my subjects in their most pleasing forms; nor can I claim to belong to that class who have something worthy of record to say when they write. Excerpt from Remarks on the Antiquity and Nature of Man: In Reply to the Recent Work of Sir Charles Lyell AT the meeting Of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, lately held at Newcastle, the work of Sir Charles Lyell on the Antiquity of Man, received such unqualified commendation from those who hold the highest rank in the scientific world, that the words of the President, in his inaugural address, must be regarded as the decision Of our modern philosophers It seems no longer possible to doubt that the human race has existed on the earth, in a barbarian state, for a period far exceeding the limit of the historical record. On the other hand, theologians of every denomina tion, who hold the Mosaic narrative to be the record of inspiration, believe that God made man perfect in mental powers and in bodily organization, - that the human -race did not exist in a barbarian state for a period exceeding the limit of the historical record, and that it is not yet six thousand years since they first appeared upon this sublunary sphere. Excerpt from Manual of Ancient History: Containing the Political History, Geographical Position, and Social State of the Principal Nations of Antiquity; Carefully Revised From the Ancient Writers IN bringing out an American edition of this work, the publishers were desirous 1 ct only to furnish a valuable work for general readers. But also to make it in point of size and price as well adapted to the wants of public instruction as they believed it to be in intrinsic merit In complying with their request to revise the work with this view, the present editor has made a few slight curtailments - principally in the first part of the volume of Ancient History - which could be made with out suppressing or in any way distorting or impairing any material fact or statement. In the English edition, all that is to be found relating to the history of the United States amounts to two or three pages, interspersed in the history of England. In the place of these meager notices, the presem editor has appended to the volume of Modern History a distinct and special chapter, giving to the history of the United States its proportion ate place in general history, and to which it is certainly entitled in i work designed for public instruction in this country. He trusts that this sketch will be found to contain a fair and clear view of the leading events of our history.
