Excerpt from A Manual of Fret Cutting and Wood Carving Acting up to his opinion, my father allowed me to buy a handsome allowance cf carpenter's tools, and all acces sories, bench, etc., and took care to let me have instruction also; so that, at the age of sixteen, before I entered the army, I was a capital carpenter, and on many occasions during my career in the army in India did my knowledge of carpentry turn to good account. But as an occupation for boys generally, carpentry has several drawbacks. The first is the great expense of tools and bench, etc. Then the Space required. It is not an employment that can be carried into the drawing-room, and during the winter holidays boys are or should be out all day skating, or taking some healthful, active exercise, leaving only the long evenings; so, except on rainy, dull days, they cannot practise their carpentry unless, like myself, they have the use of a good room in an out office. Now, these drawbacks do not apply to wood carving. With very few simple tools most beautiful work can be executed, and a very great deal can be done in the drawing room, on a working board fixed by cramps to any firm table. Excerpt from A Manual of Wood Carving This manual, like that on Drawing and Designing, previously published, is intended to form one of a series in furtherance of the principles set forth in Mr. Leland's work on "Practical Education." It has rarely happened that a volume such as this latter, proposing (as one critic declared) nothing less than a complete revolution in Education, has been so favourably received by the public, and so highly approved by competent authorities, as was the case with it. Should it be unknown to any friends of educational reform into whose hands this handbook may fall, it is to be hoped that they will think it worth while to make themselves acquainted with the principles upon which Mr. Leland's practical manuals are based. As regards this in particular, it may be observed that it is almost the only one which treats Wood-carving in a general and extended sense, and regards it as an art widely applicable to ornamentation, and not one confined to small chefs-d uvre and prize toys, facsimiles of fruit and leaves, or the like. It is the first book in which the sweep-cut, which is the very soul of all good and bold carving, has ever been described. It may be added that the work has derived great advantage from the friendly interest taken in it by Mr. John J. Holtzapffel, for which the thanks of both author and publishers are due. A Manual of Wood Carving, by Charles G. Leland, revised by John J. Holtzapffel, 1891, was a highly regarded and widely popular self-educational craft book of the 19th century Arts & Crafts movement. Embracing the naturalistic themes of William Morris and others, Leland introduced the public to wood carving as an expressive art form for use on purely decorative as well as on functional forms such as furniture, tankards and platters. The Toolemera Press Classic Reprint of A Manual Of Wood Carving is a true facsimile reproduced from the original book in our personal library.
