Excerpt from A Homiletic and Illustrative Treasury of Religious Thought (Being a New Edition of "Thirty Thousand Thoughts"), Vol. 1: Or, Twenty Thousand Choice Extracts, Selected From the Works of All the Great Writers, Ancient and Modern; With Copious Indices The large number of commonplace books, under various titles, which has issued from the press during the last quarter of a century, proves two or three facts incontrovertibly. First, the value of such collections, both as aids to reflection and as casual and fireside reading, is unmistakeably acknowledged. Secondly, the unwieldy and unmanageable size to which literature, chiefly theological, has now grown, coupled together with the increased and imperious demands of a practical, busy age, upon the real workers in life, require, as a positive necessity, readier modes to arrive at knowledge in departments necessary for occasional and immediate use, or for popular embellishment. The inadequacy of any existing homiletical encyclopaedia or dictionary of illustrations exactly to supply the want now keenly felt, may be clearly read in the many rival but fruitless endeavours to secure full or permanent public favour. Fourthly, the casual, single-handed attempts, worthy, in many instances, of high praise, are now out of the question. Excerpt from A Homiletic and Illustrative Treasury of Religious Thought, Vol. 2: Being a New Edition of "Thirty Thousand Thoughts"; Or, Twenty Thousand Choice Extracts, Selected From the Works of All the Great Writers, Ancient and Modern With Copious Indices The Second Volume contains another instalment of the scheme explained in the former Preface. The suggestions made for its improvement, whether privately or publicly in the press, have been thankfully received and carefully weighed. Nothing, however, has been said, or has occurred to the editors themselves, to render it necessary to alter the lines upon which the work was originally based. Indeed, it is no little satisfaction to find how, without producing a sense of sameness, the general principles which guided the construction of the sections in the first volume, readily adapt themselves to the others. One point, not emphasized in the Preface to the first volume, requires to be specially noted, as some unforeseen misapprehension has, in one or two quarters, strangely originated, and furnished an opportunity to critics to break a friendly lance. The sections which comprise each volume are complete in themselves they might have been separately printed and formed perfectly distinct books; and some of them, such as that of the Lord's Prayer, might furnish expository treatises, as complete as any existing work upon the subject. These sections have each their Classified List, and, where necessary, their separate Alphabetical Index. The sections themselves are related to a general comprehensive plan, but for obvious reasons they are not printed in logical sequence. As some persons may not feel disposed to purchase all the volumes, it was naturally felt that variety of reading would by such be welcomed. And besides, in order that the work might be thoroughly executed, the sections, as they in the course of things became completed, were prepared for the press. The experience of Editors of works split up into departments, is invariable. Certain sections take longer to prepare than others: in a large staff, some contributors are sure, by unavoidable or unforeseen circumstances, to be hindered; fresh matter of an important character, and to be used upon a particular subject, may be in process only of publication; or extracts of special interest, and valuable to a particular heading, may require immense research to ferret out, through the want of classification of modern theological and Biblical literature, which has grown during the last thirty years to an almost incredible if not alarming extent. We have often been inclined to compare the maturing of the various sections to the ripening of fruits, which have their different seasons, some in early summer, and some in the late autumn and during the winter, and even then in their due courses subject to delay, and uncertain as to the exact date of their actual ripening. But to put the matter in a very practical form upon this point: The gain for purposes of study, had the sections themselves been arranged in strictly logical order, is almost infinitesimal and ideal, and can be readily compensated for by a tabular form in the last volume, while the advantages from a general readers point of view, were real and considerable. Finally, the method adopted is rendered imperatively necessary, owing to the public demand for expedition. There is one other subject of a very different character which, on account of some of the reviews of the former volume, seems to require a brief notice. There lurk in some minds of a certain mould, antecedent objections to every new aid for learning, and a kind of morbid sensitiveness as to whether a royal road to knowledge, if possible, is desirable. With persons of such views, the question always presents itself in one special aspect, namely - Ought not the students to furnish his own tools? Should not a preacher cull for himself his own illustrations? Does a preacher deserve to h..

Excerpt from A Homiletic and Illustrative Treasury of Religious Thought, Vol. 4: Being a New Edition of "Thirty Thousand Thoughts"; Or Twenty Thousand Choice Extracts, Selected From the Works of All the Great Writers, Ancient and Modern, With Copious Indices In the present Volume commence what may be regarded as the Christian Dogmatic Sections of this work. On account of the size of this department it was from the first deemed advisable to form a few relief sections. We are glad to state that in the practical working we have been able to arrange all under fewer sub-divisions than was originally contemplated. In a book of this nature, although, as we formerly observed, the arrangement in each department is more or less under our control, yet the order in which the various parts appear depends in a degree upon the respective times when the extracts are supplied by literary collectors. Consequently some of the sub-sections will be found before, and some after, the main section. No difficulty, however, ought to occur, since each sub-section is as complete in its way as if it were a main section. This volume opens with "The Titles of God," which embrace all that interesting, instructive, but seldom sufficiently considered group of names for Deity in the Old Testament that are compounds of the solemn word Jehovah. Although doubtless each of these composite and important titles had received isolated pulpit treatment, yet it was reserved for the late Canon Reeves to publish in a popular form a series of discourses upon them as a separate department of Theological Study. The effort of this writer was of a very modest character, and limited by the special circumstance connected with the delivery of his discourses. The number of thoughts contained in this, section, though the extracts are comparatively iw, will be found to be of a wider range than could be practically brought together in any course of sermons. It is one of the first aims in this work, to suggest themes for a large circle rather than to elaborate a few ideas which could be used without further painstaking. The next section treats of the subject of The Attributes of God. Here a precisely opposite difficulty presented itself. No longer a paucity, but a plethora, of literary matter was before us. The task was not to find a writer who treated the subject, but to select a q.out of huge piles of weighty if not brilliant extracts from a legion of theological treatises. The principles of selection which we endeavoured to carry out were those explained in the Preface to the First volume. We sought not only to give learned remarks, which upon this subject abound in Theological Lectures and Standard Text Books, but also prominently to introduce more popular utterances, when of a suggestive character, and from a preachers point of view, which are likely to be serviceable for the actual edification or comfort of souls seeking real help. Between these relief sections on the Divine Names and Attributes, and the main section, comes the last of the foregoing relief sections, treating upon different forms of mans departure from the image of his Divine Creator. We are not aware of any work which deals systematically with the various sins and wickednesses of mans spiritual life. In this section we have not furnished anything like a complete list of sins and failings, as many of these will naturally be considered in a future section termed Vices, which will supplement the long section termed Virtues in Volumes Two and Three. Still, the groups of sins here named are tolerably comprehensive: their treatment occupies several pages, and will furnish topics which parents and teachers might profitably turn to good account in training the young. The Christian Dogmatic Section (properly so called) which next follows, is the one that has been especially and continually inquired after, by many of our warmest friends in this country and also in America.
