Excerpt from A History of France It Often happens that those of us who live in great cities do not know our next door neighbors. In the great world it is very much the same and we know little or nothing about our neighbors. Hundreds of years ago a French writer called us his next neighbor. It was impossible, he said, to write about France without also writing about England. That is very true, for during hundreds of years the history of the two countries mixed and mingled. Yet in spite of that Jacques Bonhomme and John Bull have gone on liv ing side by side knowing little of each other's history, understanding little of each other's ways. For during hundreds of years France and England were deadly enemies, and Englishmen cared little about the history of France. They thought that they knew enough about Frenchmen when they knew how to fight them. But those days have long gone past, and now Jacques Bonhomme is not only our next neighbor, but our very good friend. That being so, British boys and girls are no longer con tent to know nothing about this friend, and several years ago I got a letter from a little English boy. I like that book, he said, and I wish you would write one just the same, only about France, because we can't find anything nice about France. Since then I have received many such letters both from British boys and girls and from their cousins in America. I promised them all that some day they should have the book they asked for. They were not very pleased with that promise, I think. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of France, Vol. 1 His book was in the press before anyone dreamt that we should be standing beside our traditional enemy on the very battlefields where we have so often confronted her. No alterations have been made to meet the new conditions: history can never be wholly free from bias, but a history of France written or revised during such a crisis as the present would be so biassed as to lose its value. I may, however, be allowed to say how conscious I am that I have overstated the temperamental characteristics, and in particular the temperamental weaknesses, of the French. The truly remarkable way in which, under the present trial, France has purified herself of her traditional vices and developed virtues which were supposed to be quite alien to her character drives one to the conclusion, not only that the temperamental qualities of nations change more rapidly than we have been accustomed to think, but also that they are often only qualities which have been foisted on nations by noisy minorities. Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 1 That such a nation should have failed to find a competent En glish historian is strange, and the fact, I presume, is to be ascribed, not to the insular prejudices of English authors, among whom we naturally seek for one (for they have written of particular periods in the French annals both learnedly and well), but to the probable familiarity of the English reading public with the French histo rians themselves, whose labors, to those that' can read them, ren der any other attempts not only unnecessary, but presumptuous. But, if this may have been the case in England, it is certain that in this. Country, where we have no such general acquaintance with French literature, we need a history of France in the English lan guage. Now, as my studies had gradually led me over the whole field of French history, I came to conceive that I might perhaps turn the materials and the knowledge I had collected to some ao count in supplying this need. I will frankly confess, however, that the magnitude of the project frightened me for a long time from Preface to his History of France in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries. Excerpt from A History of France, Vol. 1: B. C. 58 A. D. 1453 This volume attempts to avoid the dryness of a summary, while it professes to deal with a very long space of time. All the more important periods of the history have, as far as pos sible, been written directly from original sources, and are treated at considerable length. The parts between, connecting one stirring time with another, have been treated very brie y, so as simply to carry on the narration without a break: like a road in a dull country between a chain of ancient and historic cities. Excerpt from The Story of Old France The aim of this volume is to give a complete graphic account of the main features of the history of France to 1715 A.D., with as much additional illuminating detail as limited space permits. Besides outlines of the principal events, this narrative includes many biographical sketches, together with the anecdotes and sayings to which allusions are often made in literature, politics, and art. It also gives such data in regard to places, public buildings, and works of art as the well informed like to have at their fingers' ends. As the book is intended mainly for youthful readers, due regard has been paid to moral teachings and to the judicious omission of harmful incidents. The book is arranged for elementary history classes, and for supplementary reading as well. Some acquaintance with the history of France is most helpful in understanding and studying literature, and English, American, Medieval, and General history. Besides, in schools where French is taught, it can serve as a work of reference for the pupils, who continually stumble across names and allusions which require elucidation. The author, therefore, hopes many schools will find this narrative useful in one or the other connection, and that it will appeal equally to teachers and pupils and perhaps to other readers also. Many names occur and recur in the text because familiarity with their appearance is desirable from an educational point of view. Excerpt from France, Its History and Revolutions Frequent visits to France, and the deep interest which it is impossible not to feel concerning recent as well as current events, have suggested the writing of this small book, With the View of presenting a simple intelligible History of the French nation - its Rise, Progress, Revolutionary Tumults, and Reverses, with such remarks as spring from some acquaintance with the condition and character of the people. Of course, the book is in no respect designed to supersede the perusal of larger and more exhaustive works, of which there is an abundance. The Story of France, though I may not'have been successful in' telling it, offers more than matter of enter tainment. In the whole range of Historical literature. Excerpt from French History for English Children The country which we now call France was not always called so, nor were the people who live in it always called the French. When it is first mentioned, which is in old Latin books written more than 1800 years ago, it is called Gallia, or Gaul, and the people are spoken of as Gauls. Gaul was in some respects the same as France is now, and in some respects very different. It was the same, or nearly the same, in its mountains, rivers, and some of the chief towns it was different in its roads, fields, villages, and, more than all, in the people who lived in it. 'when I say that some of the towns were the same, I do not mean that they look the same now as they did then, but that the Gauls had towns in many of the places where the French now have them, and that they have lasted with almost the same names ever Since. Excerpt from History of France Succeeded, in name at least, by his son and grandson, and in 882 all the Frankish dominions were joined again under the Emperor Charles the Third or the Fat, save only the kingdom of Burgundy, which had begun in 870 between the Rhone and the Alps. But in 887 Charles was deposed, and the empire was again divided. There was now a separate king of the west-franks again, but he was no longer of the house of the Karlings.
