Excerpt from A Laboratory Guide to the Study of Parasitology With the rapid growth of Parasitology there is also a growing demand for laboratory instruction in this field. The author's greatest desire during the time that he has been engaged in teaching this subject has been to place the Work upon a good systematic footing, giving it proper rank With other phases of applied biology. The following exercises are based upon several courses in Parasitology (now merged into two) that have been given by the author at the University of California during the past four years, including two summer sessions. Each exercise has had careful testing in the laboratory and is practical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The in-depth study of parasites along with their hosts is known as parasitology. The study of the relationship between the parasite and the host is also within the scope of this field. As a sub-field of biology, parasitology forms a synthesis of various other disciplines and integrates their techniques. Some of these disciplines include bioinformatics, immunology, genetics, molecular biology, etc. Medical parasitology is a subset of parasitology, which is concerned with the parasites that affect humans. It studies the diseases caused by parasites in humans and the clinical response of humans against them. The diagnosis, control, prevention and treatment of such parasitic diseases are also under the scope of this field. This book attempts to understand the multiple branches that fall under the discipline of parasitology and how such concepts have practical applications. While understanding the long-term perspectives of the topics, this book makes an effort in highlighting their impact as a modern tool for growth of the medical science. Researchers and students in this field will be assisted by this book.

Excerpt from Introduction to Animal Parasitology Special attention has been paid to presenting the life cycles of parasites in detail, relating these, where possible, to the properties of the environment. When a life cycle is presented in diagrammatic form, in this way, the result is frequently complex, but it has been found that the preparation of such diagrams helps to focus attention on some overlooked aspects of the life cycle. Prominence has also been given to two new and rapidly developing fields of parasitology, namely, immunity to animal parasites and the development oftec for the cultivation of parasites in vitro. Within the past few years remarkable advances have been made in both these fields, and these open up exciting possibilities for the future. Biological research is now being carried out on such a scale throughout the world that a text in most specialised fields is out of date almost as soon This is certainly true in parasitology and the constant flow of reprints reaching the author each week serves to emphasise this fact. Many of the ideas set down here will require reconsideration in the light of further work, and this thought should be constantly before the student, as he turns over the pages of this book. The aim of this Guide is to give the student a wide practical view of the field so that he might have a fair grasp of the general subject in its application to the health and well-being of man and beast. The exercises are in sufficient detail so that the student is enabled to continue work on some specific group or species if he so chooses. The exercises are arranged to provide sufficient matter for a laboratory session requiring from two and a half to three hours for each. A number of the exercises are divided into two or three parts, and this may be useful in cases where less time is available. The two standard courses given at the University of California upon which these exercises are based are Human Parasitology (first half year) and Veterinary Parasitology (second half year), each with three lectures per week and two laboratory sessions of from 2 1/2 to 3 hours. The author wishes to gratefully acknowledge the very able assistance rendered by Mr. A. B. Shaw, Jr., in the preparation of this laboratory guide.
