Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Nye Family In offering this book to the public then, it is not intended that it shall be taken as a complete genealogy of the Nve Family but as a collection of valuable information carrying the Nye Family back in a connected line for about seven hun dred years and enabling all who have any information of their own whether published in the book or not to connect their line back to that time. The compilation of this work was first commenced by Mr. George H. Nye of Auburn, N. Y. He sent out many letters of inquiry and the response to these was so great and so rapid that the task of arranging the material thus obtained was more than he could do with his other business duties. He therefore employed Mr. Frank E. Best, a professional genealogist. Of Chicago to take what material he already had, to obtain more and arrange the whole into such shape that it could be published. The European history was obtained and the line was completed from the time that the name originated to the present. Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Nye Family, Vol. 2 This book is a sequel to the original book, A Genealogy of the Nye Family, compiled by George Hyatt Nye and Frank E. Best, published under the auspices of the Nye Family of America Association in 1907. This book is not complete without reference to a copy of the original book, referred to later as Volume I. However, many Nyes who are listed in Volume I are also described here, either where they were not first listed in Volume I as heads of families, or simply because new infor mation was available Which was not known to the compilers of the earlier book. In all except a very small number of unavoidable cases the original numbers are unchanged. The 1907 publication has stood the test of time very well. Some few errors have been noted and some corrected herein. Because of the con fusion in many family records, painfully well known to the compilers of this volume, the remarkable accuracy of Volume I remains a tribute to the thoroughness of its compilers. Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Nye Family, Vol. 4: A Supplement to Volumes I, II and III Because this numbering method is used for many separate families, the book was necessarily indexed by page number. The index of military service is not included in the master index, being indexed inherently. Perhaps the most unique part of this book is the untraced lines Because of the nation-wide coverage which was used in updating the Nye Genealogy, almost everyone named Nye in the u.s. Was reached. Many Nye families were found whose origins were from ancestors other than Nye spelling. Some were of more recent immigration that our Benjamin, yet probably related. Some were obviously descended from Benjamin but all efforts failed in finding the mis Sing ancestral link which would connect them. In most genealogies this information, the miscellaneous untraced names, becomes lost again. We believed this information is val uable and should be preserved. Inevitably, many of the untraced names Will be shown as 'obviously' belonging to Benjamin or one of the other major Nye lines. Even with several years of repeated painstaking reviews, some continued to be recognized, right up to publication and there must still be others. In Volume II, page 16, a footnote states that the date of our ancestor Benjamin Nye's death is established as April 30, 1714. This is incorrect and was due to a misinterpretation of an excerpt from a deed of his grandson, Ichabod. The date of Benjamin's death has not been established. All that is known is that his death occurred before the above date and that he was still alive June 9, 1704. Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Nye Family, Vol. 3: Nyes of German Origin This book describes many families, some whose tie to the cor rect one of the above list can only be surmised. It is not an integrated genealogy of a single source as the other Nye Genealogies, Volumes I and II; rather it is a collection of separate works by differing genealogists whose authorship will be credited in the separate chapters. Thus the style contents and even numbering methods vary from chapter to chapter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
