Excerpt from Outlines of German Literature It may be asked, why have we not translated one of the best of many German books on the History of German Literature The reply is, that, in some instances, they are too extensive; in others they are rather critical than narrative or descriptive, and are designed for readers who already have some considerable knowledge of the subject. The work now offered to English readers is moderately com pendions, and while many critical remarks may be found its pages, its general character is descriptive. As far as is possible, writers of various schools and of several periods are here allowed to speak for themselves. In several of the quotations given, the form of abridged translation is used, in order to gain more breadth of outline. With the exception of two or three stanzas (from hymns noticed in Chapter XL), no translations, either in prose or verse, have been borrowed. The translations from minor poets, which may seem numerous, are intended to give a fair representa tion of German poets of the second class - writers whose genius is truly poetic, though not comprehensive, and who have especially excelled in their lyrical ballads. It is not long since a notion prevailed, that a review of poetical literature, with a few brief notices of history and biography, might be accepted as the history of a national literature. But theology and philosophy are, though not immediately yet closely, united with general culture, and we have, therefore, made no attempt to evade the difficulty attending the treatment of these subjects. Excerpt from A Primer of German Literature This little volume aims at nothing more ambitious than to give an outline of the growth of German literature; but while it may serve as an introduction to a more in timate acquaintance with the subject, the author hopes that readers who, without the leisure to pursue the study in larger works, may wish to know something of the men and women whose genius has illuminated the intellectual progress of Germany, may find this Primer sufficiently comprehensive to satisfy that desire. The author is gratified to learn from her publishers that a sixth edition of this Primer has been called for, and has sought, by a thorough revision, to make it worthy of continued approval for the object for which it was prepared. Excerpt from The Literature of Germany: From Its Earliest Period to the Present Time, Historically Developed This is effected by a series of biographical notices of the German authors, from the earliest period downward - separated into their respective classes and by a general chronological arrangement, intended to mark the progress of the national mind in each department of letters, and to be used as an aid to reference by the inquiring reader. This volume being, in fact, a commentary upon those Ger man writers, who have figured in the literary history of their country, distinguishes in every instance, those works of an author, which are the most worthy of attention for their artistic worth or moral excellence; and thus presents, at a glance, the principal efforts, whether of imagination or of severer thought, that have won repute or popularity. Excerpt from Introductory Studies in German Literature The aim of the volume in hand is to awaken an inter est in German literature, and to serve as a convenient basis for further work in this great subject. An analysis of literary masterpieces with some critical comments, and a short sketch Of the respective authors seemed best fitted to bring about the desired result. The books consulted, histories of literature, bibliographies of authors, and trans lations of their works, are accessible in any well-stocked library, or can be easily procured. If these Introductory Studies in German Literature should induce students to systematically read in English translation the works of German poets, to study their lives in leading biographies, or to peruse more comprehensive works on German litera ture and life, this book has fulfilled its mission. Though presupposing no knowledge of German, the author would like to think of these studies as an incentive to acquire the language. Excerpt from A History of German Literature IN writing this volume, it was my task to compress more than a thousand years of literary history into a volume of about four hundred pages. The book was not to be a collection of sheaths garnered here and there in favourite fields, but a real history, dealing with the whole subject coherently and with due regard to the relative importance of periods, writers, and writings. As it was evident that I should be obliged to omit freely and boldly, I decided, first of all, to omit the scholars, philosophers, and men of science, that is, to confine myself pretty closely to literature in the restricted English sense of the word. The broader conception of literature is no doubt the more philosophic, but it is less convenient for a writer who must economise space at every step. The German genius has done much of its best work in scholarship, philosophy, and science, but I was not writing a history of the German genius. Excerpt from A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature The Chronology and Bibliography here given were originally intended to supplement a brief outline of the history of German literature written for the texts of the Lake German Series; but as the material grew far beyond the limits of an appendix, it was thought best to rearrange and round out this material so as to form an independent work of more general value. Since the attempt was made to cover, in a small volume, the whole field of modern German literature, from Luther to the present day, anything like an exhaustive treatment was of course out of the question. In general, only such authors are included in the Bibliography as appear in the outline, such as must inevitably be mentioned in any rapid survey of modern German literature. The compiler is well aware that the selection here made is open to criticism at a great many points; but in the diflicult task of choosing some two hundred names from the great roll of modern German authors, he has at least done his best to avoid caprice and to weigh absolute and historical values impartially. The bibliographical and critical references are intend ed to include only what is best, or at least what is good; to save space, full titles are given only where they are necessary to indicate the character of the work in question. As the Bibliography is designed, in part, to serve as a guide in the purchase of books, prices are generally quoted, and the latest editions noted.
