Excerpt from A Country Schoolmaster Sm, - I suggested to the late James Shaw of Tynron Parish School, a few months before his death, that he ought to write his autobiography and incorporate with it a selection from the contri butions he had made to literature. With this object in view he had collected a number of papers, but he had done very little in the matter of selection or arrangement. The papers have come into my possession, and it is suggested that a book of about 800 pages 8vo should be issued, containing a brief historical sketch of Shaw's life and work, and a selection from his voluminous writings on a great variety of scientific, antiquarian, and popular subjects. A book of this kind would be a suitable tribute to the memory of one who possessed in a conspicuous manner literary instincts of an exceptionally brilliant order, which, had they been turned in any one direction, would have made for him a highly distinguished name in the world of letters. Excerpt from The Story of a Great Schoolmaster I knew him personally only during the lam: eight years of his life; I met him for the first time in 1914, when I was proposing to send my sons to his school. But our thoughts and interests drew us very close to one another, I never missed an opportunity of meeting and talking to him, and I was the last person he Spoke to before his sudden death. He was sixty-six years of age when he died. Those last eight years were certainly the richest and most productive of his whole career. Excerpt from The Hoosier Schoolmaster: A Novel The hoosier school-master was written and printed in the autumn of 1871. It is therefore now about twenty-one years old, and the publishers propose to mark its coming of age by issuing a li braty edition. I avail myself of the occasion to make some needed revisions, and to preface the new edition with an account of the origin and ad ventures of the book. If I should Seem to betray unbecoming pride in speaking of a story that has passed into several languages and maintained an undiminished popularity for more than a Score of years, I count on receiving the indulgence com monly granted to paternal vanity when cele brating the majority of a first-born. With all its faults on its head, this little tale has become a clas sic, in the bookseller's sense at least; and a public that has Shown so constant a partiality for it has a right to feel some curiosity regarding its history. Excerpt from The Schoolmaster of Hessville S john wimmer, the young school A teacher of the village, drove up in his buggy to the door of his sweetheart's home at the end of the one long street of Hessville, he was shocked and astonished to see Irene waiting for him on the porch in her blue calico working dress instead of her new lavender flowered voile with straw hat trimmed with lavender flowers to match. Inasmuch as his imagination had been playing with that lovely picture of her all the morning, it was disconcerting to find her, this afternoon, in blue calico - though, to be sure, even in that she was a sight to make a man tremble. Excerpt from In the Boyhood of Lincoln: A Tale of the Tunker Schoolmaster and the Times of Black Hawk In this volume, as in the Log school-house on the Co lumbia, the adventures of a pioneer school-master are made to represent the early history of a newly settled country. The Log school-house on the Columbia gave a view of the early history of Oregon and Washington. This volume collects many of the Indian romances and cabin tales of the early settlers of Illinois, and pictures the hardships and manly struggles of one Who by force of early character made himself the greatest of representative Americans. The character of the Dunkard, or Tunker, as a wandering school-master, may be new to many readers. Such mission aries of the forests and prairies have now for the most part disappeared, but they did a useful work among the pioneer settlements on the Ohio and Illinois Rivers. In this case we present him as a disciple of Pestalozzi and a friend of Froebel, and as one who brings the German methods of storytelling into his work. Some of these friends and acquaintances are no longer living, and the reminiscences of the earlier schools with which they supplied me it would be diffi cult again to duplicate.
