The purpose of this paper is to assess the current literature on economic analyses of different manure management systems, with the intent to reach conclusions about the cost effectiveness of different manure handling practices on the level of greenhouse gas reduction. After an introduction, section 2 reviews studies examining the optimal (minimal cost) manure handling system for an individual producer. Section 3 reviews studies examining the costs of alternative manure management systems in relation to their ability to reduce nutrient emissions. These studies are mainly from the Netherlands, where concerns over ammonia levels are high. The final section notes gaps in knowledge in the literature and suggests areas for further research.
