After gathering ingredients for a lesson, she returns home to find her master, Ithanalin the Wise, transformed into a statue. A tax collector interrupted Ithanalin while working on a spell, a magic mirror tells her, with the result that the wizard's soul has been distributed among the various household objects. The first book devoted solely to the diverse and often unexpected museums in the Pine Tree State, Maine’s Museums: Art, Oddities & Artifacts showcases a broad range of art, history, maritime, children’s, and unusual museums. With world-class collections of fine art by past and contemporary masters as well as the true stories of people and industries that helped shape the state and the nation, Maine’s museums invite visitors to indulge their curiosities and passions to learn about lighthouses, whales, antique cars, seashore trolleys, sardine canning, and folk art. They open our eyes to how Native Americans, shipbuilders, fishermen, lumbermen, Civil War soldiers, artists, and immigrants all had a hand in developing the state. They inspire children to discover the world and they reopen more than one Victorian-era cabinet of curiosities. Whether you want to see great works of art or truly unique collections—from umbrella covers to strange creatures—you’ll find it in Maine and you’ll find it in Maine’s Museums.

This book presents a detailed account of authenticity in the visual arts from the Paleolithic to the postmodern. The restoration of works of art can alter the perception of authenticity and may result in the creation of fakes and forgeries. These interactions set the stage for the subject of this book, which initially examines the conservation perspective, then continues with a detailed discussion of notions of authenticity and philosophical background. There is a disputed territory between those who view the present-day cult of authenticity as fundamentally flawed and those who have analyzed its impact upon different cultural milieus, operating across performative, contested, and fragmented ground. The book discusses several case studies where the ideas of conceptual authenticity, aesthetic authenticity, and material authenticity can be incorporated into an informative discourse about art from the ancient to the contemporary, illuminating concerns relating to restoration and art forgery.
