The Nationwide Personal Transportation Study (NPTS) was designed to collect information on all trips taken during a designated 24-hour period and some additional detail on trips of 75 miles or more during the preceding 14-day period. Data were also gathered on the availability and use of public transportation, types of motorized vehicles available to the household, and characteristics of the trips taken including mode, purpose, miles traveled, time required, and persons on the trip. Also provided is information about trips taken by persons who commute to and/or from their job. There are 32 files, covering the following eight areas for each year quarter : Household Characteristics (Parts 1, 9, 17, and 25), Household Member Characteristics (Parts 2, 10, 18, and 26), Household Vehicle Information (Parts 3, 11, 19, and 27), Occupation and Travel-to-Work Data (Parts 4, 12, 20, and 28), Travel Day Trip Data (Parts 5, 13, 21, and 29), Fourteen-Day Travel Period Trips (Parts 6, 14, 22, and 30), Stop Data for Fourteen-Day Travel Period Trips (Parts 7, 15, 23, and 31), and Annual Long-Trip Data (Parts 8, 16, 24, and 32) compiled from the National Household Travel Survey for the 13,365 households common to both studies.
